Berlin's most traditional eco-Advent market on one of the oldest streets in the city
Sophienstraße is one of Berlin's oldest addresses. The cobblestones, the brick facades, the view of St. Sophia's Church – a backdrop enough for a market that has shown for three decades that Christmas and ecology are not a contradiction. The concept originated in 1995 and was awarded first prize by the Berlin Senate in the Environmental Competition in 1996.
The approximately 80 exhibitors must adhere to binding ecological standards: no disposable items, no plastic tableware, LED lighting at every stand, organic certified food, fair trade as a minimum requirement. The range of products includes Berlin design crafts, textiles made from natural fibers, handmade jewelry, organic honey and wild herb teas, as well as fairly traded coffee, vegetarian street food, and mulled wine in reusable cups.
The market is located in the district of Mitte, directly between Hackescher Markt and the New Synagogue, in the shadow of the colorful tourist crowds – and that's precisely the appeal. Those looking for a quiet alternative to the mulled wine and light stress at the nearby Alexanderplatz or Gendarmenmarkt will find a few hundred meters with meaning here: art, crafts, time to talk, acoustic live music instead of constant background noise.
The organizer is EVENTS-R. Bielefeldt, a small Berlin family business that has curated Sophienstraße since its beginnings. Stand allocation is not based on the highest bid, but on thematic coherence – a reason why the mix has remained stable over the years.
Unlike the predominantly tourist-oriented large markets, Sophienstraße attracts a predominantly Berlin audience: customers from the residential areas around Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, and Friedrichshain, regular visitors from Charlottenburg, Spandau residents with purpose, and tourists who want to take something authentic home. The average visitor stay is around 90 minutes, significantly above the average of other Berlin Advent markets.
In 2026, the market runs for four Advent weekends in Sophienstraße between Großer Hamburger Straße and Rosenthaler Straße. The eight market days result in approximately 40,000 visitors over the season.
New for the 2026 edition: an expanded selection of small Berlin manufacturers participating for the first time, as well as an additional live music program on the main stage in front of Sophienkirche on all Advent Sundays from 2 PM onwards.
Key areas remain: organic culinary delights (mulled wine from certified organic wine, street food vegetarian and vegan), natural cosmetics, textiles made from hemp and wool, wooden toys, arts and crafts made from glass and ceramics. Deposit system at all mulled wine stands.
Detailed weekly program available shortly beforehand at weihnachtsmarkt-sophienstrasse.de.
Free admission. Deposit system for mulled wine and hot drinks.
S-Bahn S5/S7/S9 or Tram M1/M5 to Hackescher Markt, then a 3-minute walk. U-Bahn U2 Weinmeisterstraße, U8 Weinmeisterstraße. Traveling by car is not recommended, with very limited parking in the city center.
On all four Advent weekends: Saturday 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Sunday 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
Free.
Late afternoon as dusk sets in is the most beautiful time. Sundays are significantly less crowded than Saturdays. Can be combined with a visit to the nearby Sophienkirche.
