Two days of grand anniversary celebration on Museum Island – concerts, around 100 guided tours, workshops, DJ Mousse T., and 200 years of Berlin's World Heritage
In 1830, the Altes Museum opened at Berlin's Lustgarten as the first building on the narrow arm of the Spree, now called Museum Island. The official founding year of Museum Island is set at 1826 – the year the foundation stone was laid. In 2026, Berlin's UNESCO World Heritage site will therefore celebrate 200 Years of Museum Island, and the grand opening weekend of the anniversary season is the Inselfest on June 6 and 7, 2026.
Saturday will be opened by the Deutsches Theater Berlin with theater excerpts in the Kolonnadenhof. This will be followed by the participatory choir format Dabei-Open-Air with the Berlin Choir Association – 16 choirs showcasing the diversity of the Berlin choir scene and inviting the audience to sing along. In the evening, the Bene Aperdannier Trio will take over the Kolonnadenhof with jazz, soul, and modern grooves.
Sunday opens with the Salonorchester Unter'n Linden and classics from opera and operetta. The highlight is the concert by the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin with Brahms' String Sextet. The evening concludes with DJ Mousse T. – one of Berlin's most famous DJs – with a set. During the day, the UNESCO World Heritage Day program will explore the question of how world heritage supports democracy and peace.
On both days, the Museum Island houses – Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Bode-Museum, Pergamonmuseum, James-Simon-Galerie – will offer around 100 guided tours: classic themed tours, special tours with museum directors, "surprise tours" whose destination is only revealed at the start. In addition, there will be free workshops for families and adults.
With the Inselfest day ticket (€16 / concessions €8), you get access to all Museum Island museums as well as the Friedrichswerdersche Kirche and PETRI Berlin. Children and young people under 18 are free. Annual pass holders can bring one guest for free.
The celebrations will kick off as early as Friday, June 5, 2026: with a school program for up to 1,000 students and the opening of the Dabei-Open-Air choir festival.
From Saturday, June 6 to Sunday, June 7, 2026, Museum Island will transform into a grand festival ground: the opening weekend of the 200th anniversary celebration with concerts, theater, around 100 guided tours, and a DJ set to close. Already on Friday, June 5, a school program and the "Dabei-Open-Air" choir festival will kick off.
