University festival for the 80th anniversary of the Technical University of Berlin
The Technical University of Berlin has a rich history: founded in 1879 as the Royal Technical University of Berlin, it became one of Europe's most important technical universities during the Weimar Republic. In the Nazi era, it was ideologically disenfranchised and many Jewish faculty members were expelled. It was re-founded in 1946 as the Technical University of Berlin — with a conscious break from its problematic past. The 80-year mark in 2026 is the occasion for a summer festival that connects the university's past, present, and future.
The venue is the central TU campus at Hertzallee corner Fasanenstraße in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf — right between the main TU building and the university library, with the Tiergarten nearby. A rather unusual festival area, but the right place for a university festival: students, faculty, TU staff, and invited representatives from politics, business, and society can meet in a festival setting.
For its 80th anniversary, TU Berlin, in cooperation with a Berlin brewery, has brewed a TU Anniversary Beer — its own special variety, exclusively served at the summer festival and afterwards in local pubs. Such university beers have a tradition (Heidelberg, Munich, Hamburg), and TU Berlin will have its own version in 2026. Live music with local Berlin bands, street food stalls, and an open stage area for speeches and encounters will make the evening a classic university festival format with a special anniversary touch.
