Tribute concerts every two weeks on the market square of the North Frisian district town
Nortorf, with just under 7,000 inhabitants located between Kiel, Neumünster, and Rendsburg in the Rendsburg-Eckernförde district, has had a special summer cultural hit since 2022: the Nortorfer Musiksommer. What began as a small event series is now one of the best-known open-air tribute series in Schleswig-Holstein, attracting several thousand visitors from all over the North to the town center every second Thursday evening.
The concept is clear: Six Thursdays between June and the end of August, with each evening dedicated to a famous band or music genre. On stage are tribute bands – musicians who truly master the work of the great originals, often with elaborate stage sets and costumes. The series sees itself as a homage to the timeless great names of rock, pop, and German Schlager history.
A special feature of the Nortorfer Musiksommer: Admission is always free. The series is financed entirely by sponsors, municipal support, and the voluntary commitment of the town marketing association. This deliberately positions the format as a community event – not a commercial festival. A supporting act, often from youth culture (kids' rock bands, local acts), opens the evening from 5:00 PM, and the main act performs from 8:00 PM.
The concept is complemented in mid-August by the Nortorfer Weinfest (three days of wine tasting and open-air program) and a large Schlagernacht (Schlager music night). This creates a dense open-air program that fills the market square almost every week from mid-June to the end of August.
Nortorf is strategically located between the major cities of the North – Kiel, Neumünster, and Rendsburg – and is easily accessible via the A7 and A210 motorways. The market square, with its historic core and the 12th-century Vicelinkirche (St. Vicelin's Church), provides a charming backdrop for the concerts. Visitors to the Musiksommer can combine their day with a trip to Westensee or Wittensee – both just minutes from Nortorf.
Six Thursdays between June 18 and August 27, 2026, Nortorf's market square will transform into an open-air stage. Per date: supporting act from 5:00 PM (often with Wunderkinder Kids-Rock or other local acts), main act from 8:00 PM, ending around 10:00 PM.
The town of Nortorf and its marketing association finance the series through sponsors and their own funds – admission remains free for the public. Food and drinks are available from stalls on the market square.
