Apartment building concerts in stairwells, courtyards, and balconies — Frankfurt (Oder) becomes a concert stage
Treppenhausmusik Frankfurt (Oder) is a municipal cultural project that turns the traditional concert order on its head: instead of drawing audiences into a hall, the music comes to the neighborhood. From June 15th to 19th, 2026, stairwells, inner courtyards, balconies, and apartment hallways in Frankfurt (Oder) — the largest city in the Brandenburg district of Oder-Spree-Beeskow on the Polish border — will transform into spontaneous stages.
The concept is deliberately socially oriented. Wohnungswirtschaft Frankfurt (Oder) GmbH (WOWI) and WohnBau Frankfurt (Oder) eG open their residential properties for concerts, allowing people who are limited by age or health to experience live music right outside their own doors. "Musicians don't perform on classical stages, but right where people live" — this is how the organizers describe it.
In its second edition in 2026, solo artists, bands, choirs, and performance acts are invited. Acoustic sets will dominate — the acoustics of a stairwell are a playing field in themselves, which each performance utilizes differently. Applications for participating artists are open until May 15th, 2026, and the exact program will be published shortly before the festival.
Frankfurt (Oder), one of Brandenburg's upper centers with around 57,000 inhabitants, is home to the Europa-Universität Viadrina, the traditional Kleist-Forum, and the German-Polish twin city with Słubice. Treppenhausmusik fits into this mix of high culture and everyday culture — and turns the typical prefabricated housing estates and old town districts of eastern Brandenburg into concert spaces.
After a successful premiere in 2025, the format is entering its second round in 2026. The feedback from tenants was so positive that the organizers are expanding the concept by an extra day and more locations.
The 2nd Treppenhausmusik spans five days from June 15th to 19th, 2026. The organizers are Wohnungswirtschaft Frankfurt (Oder) GmbH (WOWI) and WohnBau Frankfurt (Oder) eG, who are making their residential properties in Frankfurt (Oder) available as performance venues.
Until May 15th, 2026, musicians, bands, choirs, and performance artists can apply. The program will then be published per venue. The range includes acoustic sets, vocal ensembles, and small creative formats suitable for the unique acoustics of stairwells and inner courtyards.
The focus is on tenants who cannot access traditional concert halls — the music comes to them. This is the second edition following the acclaimed premiere in 2025.
