About Traunreuter Kirta

With the »Traunreuter Kirta«, the city of Traunreut in the Traunstein district established a new Bavarian Kirchweih (traditional festival) format on the market square in 2024. For several days, the market square transforms into a Kirta spectacle with an alpine hut, regional bands, traditional costumes, and delicacies – with Kirchweih Monday (marked as »Kirchweih-Montag« in Bavaria) as the highlight of the daily program.

A Young Tradition with a Clear Concept

The Traunreuter Kirta was first held in 2024 by the city of Traunreut on the newly designed market square, making it one of the youngest Bavarian Kirta formats in the Chiemgau region. The term Kirta refers to Kirchweih in the Upper Bavarian-Austrian dialect; the city of Traunreut has consciously reinterpreted the format, extending it over a longer festival period with »Days of the Economy« and Kirchweih focal points.

Bavarian Delicacies on the New Market Square

The venue is the newly designed market square of the city of Traunreut – a flagship of urban development. A central alpine hut forms the visual core, surrounded by standing tables, regional bands, and stalls with Upper Bavarian delicacies. Traditional costume is not mandatory but welcome, and significantly shapes the atmosphere.

Program Structure

  • Thursday – Opening with traditional beer tapping, performance by the opening band (in the 2025 edition, the Alpenblick Quintett with Oberkrainer sound).
  • Friday – Festival operation with another live band (2025: Traunsound with Austropop, folk songs, and current hits).
  • Saturday – Festival day with clubs, Upper Bavarian snack platters, live music.
  • Sunday – Traditionally Kirchweih Sunday, to which in 2025, a Kirchweih Monday was also added for the first time as a »Day of the Economy« – a deliberate bridging day that combines business and tradition.

Traunreut in the Chiemgau Region

Traunreut is one of the most populous cities in the Traunstein district – in the Chiemgau economic region, between Chiemsee and Salzburg. Unlike the touristically known Chiemsee towns, Traunreut is characterized by industry and urban development (TYROLIT, Heidenhain), which shapes the city festivals: bourgeois, broadly based, with a focus on local retail and club life. The Traunreuter Kirta fills a gap in the festival calendar and directly connects to the city's strong sense of city and folk festival tradition.

Admission and Reservations

Admission is free. However, the city of Traunreut points out that reservations for 2026 are not yet possible – the exact program will be finalized and communicated in the first half of 2026. 2026 will be the 3rd edition of the Kirta.

Traunreuter Kirta — edition 2026

The 3rd Traunreuter Kirta 2026 is announced on the official website, the exact date in October 2026 will be announced in the first half of the year. Following the example of the 2nd edition (October 16–26, 2025), a multi-day Kirta format is expected again, with an opening on Thursday and focus days around Kirchweih Sunday/Monday.

The city of Traunreut has confirmed via its official channel (traunreuter-kirta.de) and traunreut.de that the Kirta will be held annually; 2026 will be the 3rd edition. As of the research date, reservations are not yet possible, so the exact date is still pending at the time of creating this fact sheet.

Programmatically, the city is likely to continue the proven choreography of the 2nd edition in 2025: Opening on Thursday with beer tapping and opening band, festival operation over several days on the market square with an alpine hut, regional bands, Upper Bavarian delicacies, and participation of local businesses on Kirchweih Monday (»Day of the Economy«). The program will be published in its final form in the first half of 2026 on traunreuter-kirta.de and traunreut.de.
