Folk dance and traditional costumes on the Hallig — every two years on the Hanswarft
The Trachtensommer is one of North Germany's most extraordinary folk events. The venue is not a ballroom or a city, but Hallig Hooge — a small settlement on a Hallig, surrounded by the North Sea during storm surges, located in the North Frisian Wadden Sea (UNESCO World Heritage). Every two years, most recently in 2024, dance and costume groups from Germany and abroad come together to bring North German and Frisian dance culture to life on the Hanswarft, the central Hallig of the island.
The groups decide for themselves whether to present their dances with live music or vocal accompaniment. Characteristic are the historical costumes — the Hooge costume, for example, consists of the Pai pinafore dress, headscarves, shoulder cloths, sleeves, several aprons, and rich silver chest jewelry. Wearing a complete costume takes several hours and requires assistance — the headdresses and hairstyles are elaborately crafted. Costumes of this kind are family treasures passed down through generations.
Ships from Nordstrand, Schlüttsiel, Föhr, Amrum, and Sylt bring dance groups and guests to the Hallig. Some groups arrive on Friday or early Saturday. The Saturday evening concludes with a joint concert for everyone. The mix of historical costumes, lively dance tradition, and the peculiar atmosphere of a Hallig in the Wadden Sea — the wide horizon, the sheep on the salt marshes, the constant wind — makes the Trachtensommer unique.
Hallig Hooge belongs to the North Frisia district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and is located in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. The Hallig Hooge Dance and Costume Group is part of the Schleswig-Holstein Heimatbund and has been preserving North Frisian costume and dance culture since 1997. What began as a small children's and youth group is now a fixture in the North German folk scene.
The 2026 edition continues the biennial rhythm of the Trachtensommer — the previous edition took place in 2024. Dance and costume groups from all over North Germany are invited, including groups from North Frisia, Dithmarschen, Schleswig, and partly also from the Netherlands or Denmark.
The groups arrive on Friday or Saturday morning via the regular ferries. During the day, they present their dances on the Hanswarft, and in the evening, everyone gathers for a joint concert. The organizer is the Hallig Hooge Dance and Costume Group.
The exact dance program and participating groups will be published on hooge.de in the summer of 2026.
