A literary festival on Hallig Hooge — five days of readings, discussions, and walks in the Wadden Sea
Hallig Hooge is one of the ten North Frisian halligen—small, undiked marsh islands that are regularly flooded during storm surges ("Landunter"), except for their warfts, the artificially raised residential mounds. Around 100 people live here on approximately 5.7 km²—one of the smallest municipalities in Germany. The hallig belongs to the Hallig community of Hooge in the Nordfriesland district (Schleswig-Holstein) and is part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Wadden Sea.
The Hooger Literatur Tage originated from the idea that readings and literary discussions take on a different quality in an isolated environment: less hustle and bustle, more focus, longer breaks, more intense encounters. The events take place in the few suitable rooms on the hallig—in the community hall, in guesthouses, sometimes directly outdoors on a warft. Between readings, literary walks lead through the mudflats, along the salt marshes, and to the characteristic places of the hallig—the hallig itself becomes the theme and co-author of the festival.
The Hooger Literatur Tage are organized by the Hooger Geschichtsverein (Hooge Historical Society) and the Hallig community of Hooge, with support from the guesthouse operators, the Wadden Sea Conservation Station, and the Schleswig-Holstein Tourism Organization. The festival has a familial character—authors and audience inevitably meet on the small hallig outside of the official programs.
The festival week of September 14–18, 2026, continues the young tradition of the Hooger Literatur Tage. Organizers Hooger Geschichtsverein and Halligkommune Hooge present a program of author readings, workshop talks, and guided literary walks across the hallig.
As in previous years, the festival takes place in various locations on the hallig: in the community hall, in guesthouses, and outdoors on the warfts. Between readings, guided walks lead through the mudflats and along the salt marshes — literature and landscape merge.
