Autumn island market on Hallig Hooge
Hallig Hooge is one of the ten Halligen in the North Frisian Wadden Sea and is located about 8 km off the mainland coast in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, district of Nordfriesland. With around 100 inhabitants, it is one of the largest Halligen and is characterised by ten warfts – artificial mounds – on which houses, stables, and community buildings stand. During high tide ('Land unter'), the Hallig is regularly flooded, with only the warfts remaining above water. This unique geography makes every island market a special experience.
The autumn market takes place around October 3rd on the Hallig. Regional products are presented on the warfts and in the community rooms: Hallig cheese and butter, smoked fish, Frisian baked goods, Hallig lamb products, pickled vegetables, honey, jams made from sea buckthorn and Hallig berries. In addition, craftspeople offer hand-woven fabrics, pottery, jewellery made from washed-up natural materials, wood carvings, and Frisian prints.
Unlike in midsummer, the Hallig is quiet in October – mass tourism has disappeared, wading birds migrate in large numbers, the sun is low and bathes the salt marshes in golden light. The Hooger Herbstmarkt is therefore consciously aimed at visitors who want to get to know the quiet side of the Hallig. Those who stay overnight can, with a bit of luck, marvel at the stars over the Wadden Sea – Hallig Hooge is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea and is one of the darkest places in Northern Germany.
The market is a meeting point for the Hallig people, a rare occasion to talk to the inhabitants, hear stories about life on the edge of the sea, and experience the unique cultural heritage of North Frisia up close. On Hallig Hooge in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, district of Nordfriesland, tradition is not staged, but lived.
As every year, the Hallig inhabitants use October 3rd – German Unity Day and a long weekend – to attract guests to the Hallig. The warfts open their courtyards, market stalls are set up, and Hallig products are presented. An ideal opportunity to get to know the Wadden Sea in its autumnal tranquility.
