The largest Schützenfest (marksmen's festival) in the Düren district — six days of parades, open-air concerts, and a King's Ball with King Sebastian Schlenker
Linnich, a town of around 13,000 inhabitants in the Düren district, is picturesquely situated on the southern bank of the Rur river, near the Dutch border. The town has a rich history: first documented in the 9th century, it was the seat of a castle for centuries, almost completely destroyed in World War II, and rebuilt in the 1950s. Today, Linnich is primarily known for its bow and arrow production, the German Stained Glass Museum, and its exceptionally active marksmen's community. The backbone of this is the association Vereinigte Schützengesellschaften Linnich e.V., formed from the merger of three traditional Linnich marksmen's societies, which organizes the annual Bronk.
The name "Bronk" for the Linnich Schützenfest is a local peculiarity: in the Lower Rhenish dialect, "Bronk" refers to a specific type of Volksfest (people's festival) with parades and marksmen's traditions — a designation cultivated only in Linnich. This makes the Linnich Schützenfest linguistically unique and a marker of local identity.
With its six festival days and the enormous participation of marksmen from across the region, the Bronk positions itself as the largest Schützenfest in the Düren district. The Vereinigte Schützengesellschaften Linnich count several hundred active members, complemented by their Queen's court structures, youth departments, women's departments, marching bands, and affiliated clubs from across the Rhineland and neighboring Netherlands.
The Schützenkönig (King) 2026 is Sebastian Schlenker — elected according to the traditional King's shooting competition of the previous year and confirmed according to all club regulations. As King, he sets the festive tone for the entire Bronk: his appearance in the parade, his King's Ball, his court ladies — all make him the public face of the 2026 festival.
The Bronk kicks off with the opening of the main marquee, initial concerts, and the assembly of the marksmen's societies.
Sunday parade of the societies, morning pint (Frühshoppen), first open-air concerts.
King's Ball or one of the central Bronk concerts in the marquee — Whit Monday traditionally marks the first highlight of the festival week.
The highlight for the marksmen themselves: the grand King's shooting competition at the society's own shooting range, often attended by friendly marksmen's societies.
The public highlight: the Grand Parade through Linnich city center with all the United Marksmen, affiliated clubs from the Düren district, marching bands, music ensembles, decorated floats, and the Royal Family in special attire. A grand spectacle for which the entire town is out and about.
Festival finale with final open-air concerts, the concluding King's Ball, and the ceremonial farewell of the Royal Family.
The festival marquee on the Schützenplatz (marksmen's square) is the pulsating heart of the Bronk: it hosts the King's Balls, dance evenings, club receptions, and beer nights. Live music is provided by dance bands, sometimes also pop cover bands. In parallel, open-air concerts by the marksmen's music ensembles take place on several squares in the city center — playing marching classics, folk music, and lively festival tunes.
The organizer, Vereinigte Schützengesellschaften Linnich e.V., is an association of three traditional Linnich marksmen's societies — a structure that has evolved over recent decades to consolidate the strengths of Linnich's marksmen's scene. The association has a board, a Queen's court structure, its own commissions for various aspects of club life, and a historical archive documenting the centuries-long history of Linnich marksmen.
