Regional brewing artistry on the historic Vichyplatz
Bad Tölz, located in the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshofen in southern Upper Bavaria on the Isar river, has been a centre of Bavarian brewing artistry for centuries. The Tölzer Bierfest picks up on this heritage: instead of one large festival ground, it has brought regional breweries together for a joint presentation on the Vichyplatz – one of the most beautiful squares in Bad Tölz's old town – since 2024.
The special feature of the Tölzer Bierfest is its concept: instead of classic litre steins, the beers are served in smaller glasses at fair prices. This allows visitors to sample the diversity of the participating breweries and discover new favourite varieties without reaching their limit after just two steins. An idea that appeals equally to beer connoisseurs and curious gourmets.
In addition to pure tasting, the Tölzer Bierfest offers a varied supporting programme: brewery tours for €5 per person (children under 16 free), target shooting, live music on all three days, and the traditional Schafkopf tournament on Sunday. Bavarian delicacies such as pretzels, Obatzda, Leberkäse, and cold platters satisfy hunger between tastings.
The Vichyplatz – named after its French partner city Vichy – is located in the heart of Bad Tölz's old town with its magnificent Lüftlmalerei facades, not far from the famous Marktstrasse. The historic setting with its fountain and burgher houses gives the beer festival an atmosphere that combines Bavarian tradition and urban charm.
The Tölzer Bierfest is a young event – 2026 will only see its third edition – but it has quickly established itself as a convivial autumn festival. Organised by the business association "Wir für Tölz" with support from the city, it is proof of how local players can combine regional identity and economic strength.
For the third time, Bad Tölz will celebrate its beer festival on the historic Vichyplatz from September 11 to 13, 2026. Eight regional breweries – including Binderbräu, Mühlfeldbräu, Stegbräu, Hoppebräu, Klosterbrauerei Reutberg, and Brauhaus Garmisch – will be serving in small glasses.
On Friday and Saturday, the festival opens at 5 p.m. each day, and on Sunday from 10 a.m. for the traditional Frühschoppen (morning pint). Brewery tours (€5, children under 16 free) offer a behind-the-scenes look at brewing, and the Sunday highlight is the Schafkopf tournament with the Tölz championship.
The evening live music alternates between brass bands, traditional Bavarian music, and dialect rock – creating a fitting atmosphere for beer tasting in the mild September air.
