Neighbourly street festival in the Karlsruhe district of Beiertheim-Bulach
The Beiertheimer Sommerhock is one of the typical Karlsruhe district festivals — small, organised by volunteers, and entirely focused on the neighbourhood. The organiser is the Bürgerverein Karlsruhe Beiertheim e.V., which has been running the festival for many years, turning the Beiertheim-Bulach district into a large open-air meeting place once a summer.
The venue is the intersection of Breite Straße / Gebhardstraße, a central point in the district between Schwetzinger Straße and Marie-Alexandra-Straße. For the festival, the intersection is closed on Saturday afternoon, benches and tables are set up, a catering stand is erected, and there is a small stage for musical contributions. The event has the character of an extended house-clearance sale with catering — cosy, manageable, with a clear local connection.
As the sun moves over the rooftops of southern Karlsruhe, the Sommerhock quickly fills up. Parents bring their children, seniors meet neighbours they only briefly know from the mailbox, and club members serve drinks. Catering is provided by members of the citizens' association and volunteers: sausages from the grill, salads, homemade cakes, regional beers, Baden wines, and soft drinks. A bouncy castle or a small children's programme are often included.
On the same day, the SV Karlsruhe Beiertheim e.V., an all-round sports club with eight departments (football, gymnastics, table tennis, rehabilitation sports, among others), celebrates its own club festival under the motto “SVK Vereint” on the sports grounds. The programme there includes sports shows by individual departments, live music, and catering. Those who visit one often go to the other — the distance between the two festivals is short.
The Karlsruhe district of Beiertheim-Bulach is located south of the city centre, behind the Albgrünzug and the Günther-Klotz-Anlage. With around 7,500 inhabitants, the district has retained a strong identity: active clubs, local businesses, its own district newspaper, two schools. It is precisely this community that sustains the Sommerhock — and it therefore remains a neighbourhood festival and not a major tourist event.
The 2026 edition sticks to the usual format: intersection Breite / Gebhardstraße, starting at 3 PM, catering by club members, small stage for music, bouncy castle for children. The Citizens' Association has called for active participation — every helping hand for setup and dismantling, catering, or childcare is welcome.
Simultaneously, the SV Karlsruhe Beiertheim club festival (“SVK Vereint”) takes place on the sports grounds — short distances between the two events.
Detailed programme will be published by the Citizens' Association and the SVK shortly before the date on beiertheim.de or sv-karlsruhe-beiertheim.de.
