Largest Kirmes in the Westerwald district with thirteen live bands on three stages in Montabaur's city center
The Kirmes Montabaur is considered the largest Kirmes in the entire Westerwald district. For four days, the historic city center beneath the striking Montabaur Castle transforms into a single festival site with stages, amusement rides, and market stalls.
In 2026, the Kirmes will be open from July 31st to August 3rd. Thirteen bands from the genres of cover, soul, rock, and folk music will perform on three open-air stages at Großer Markt, Konrad-Adenauer-Platz, and in Kirchstraße. Additionally, there will be a Kirmes parade, barrel tapping ceremony, a craft market, a fireworks display, and a large amusement ride area on the Eichwiese.
When the Kirmes Montabaur opens at the beginning of August, it attracts visitors from the entire Westerwald, the adjacent Taunus region, the Rheingau, and even beyond. With its scale, musical diversity, and the unique backdrop of the castle town, it clearly stands out from the smaller village Kirmes of the region.
The musical concept is ambitious: Thirteen different bands will perform on three stages spread across the squares of the city center. The spectrum ranges from cover bands and soul and rock acts to traditional folk music and brass bands. This ensures that audiences of all generations find their program—from families with children in the afternoon to young adults ready to party late into the evening.
Despite its size, the Kirmes remains true to its traditional character. The festive barrel tapping ceremony, the raising of the Kirmes tree, the Kirmes parade, and the craft market are fixed program points. The grand fireworks display is one of the visual highlights and draws thousands to Konrad-Adenauer-Platz every year.
The classic fairground area with carousels, a Ferris wheel, bumper cars, and numerous other attractions is set up on the Eichwiese. This keeps the city center reserved for stages, the market, and gastronomy, while families find their own area of entertainment.
The district capital Montabaur, with its distinctive yellow-and-white castle on the Schlossberg, is one of the most characteristic townscapes in the Westerwald. The historic city center with its half-timbered houses and baroque squares provides a perfect backdrop for the Kirmes.
The Kirmes Montabaur 2026, from July 31st to August 3rd, once again sets standards as the largest Kirmes in the Westerwald district. Thirteen bands from the genres of cover, soul, rock, and folk music will perform on three open-air stages in the city center—at Großer Markt, Konrad-Adenauer-Platz, and in Kirchstraße. The traditional Kirmes parade, barrel tapping ceremony, Kirmes tree, a craft market, and the grand fireworks display complete the program. The amusement rides are set up on the Eichwiese.
The 2026 program will be published in detail by the organizer in the summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: a festive opening with barrel tapping on Friday, main musical programs on Saturday and Sunday, the traditional Kirmes parade, a family day with a morning pint and fireworks. A total of thirteen bands are planned for three stages, plus an area for the craft market and a dedicated amusement park on the Eichwiese.
