Classical Open-Air at Thumsee near Bad Reichenhall — a symphonic summer night concert with fireworks over the lake
The Thumsee, located a good three kilometers west of Bad Reichenhall in the Berchtesgadener Land, is one of Upper Bavaria's most idyllic mountain lakes. Nestled between the Ristfeuchthorn and Müllnerhorn, the narrow body of water lies in a protected valley, free from through traffic and motorized boats. It is precisely in this tranquil location that the "Thumsee Brennt" summer night concert comes to life once a year — usually in July.
The event is organized by the Bad Reichenhaller Philharmonisches Orchester, the only professional Philharmonic Orchestra in Upper Bavaria. The orchestra is usually experienced as a spa orchestra in the Alte Saline and the Königliches Kurhaus — once a year, it packs its music stands and instruments and heads out to the Thumsee.
The program of "Thumsee Brennt" is deliberately not strictly faithful to the original works. It combines a core classical repertoire with unexpected crossovers — film music, popular classical pieces in new arrangements, beatbox improvisations with a symphony orchestra, and a surprise guest each year. The concept is broadly defined: classical music fans should find their favorite pieces, and newcomers should be offered an accessible entry point.
Arguably the most emotional moment of the evening comes after the final chord: the orchestra falls silent, the lights dim — and over the dark water of the Thumsee, a spectacular fireworks display ignites, bathing the surrounding mountain slopes in changing colors. The reflection on the lake doubles every explosion. This staging gives rise to the name "Thumsee Brennt" (Thumsee is Burning).
Unlike a concert hall performance, Thumsee Brennt is a meadow event: blankets, picnic baskets, regional food, wine, and cool beer are welcome. Those who don't bring their own provisions can purchase food from the stands on site. Seating is not assigned — those who arrive early can choose the best spot by the lake.
The 2026 edition is confirmed via the official event page of the Bad Reichenhaller Philharmoniker and the event portal of the city of Bad Reichenhall. The concert is themed "Classical meets Beatbox" — a combination that blends symphonic core repertoire with beatbox elements and an unannounced star guest.
Conducted by Daniel Spaw. Several thousand concertgoers with picnic blankets are expected to gather on the meadow at Thumsee, as is customary — making it the largest open-air classical event in the Berchtesgadener Land region during the summer.
