Three days of tradition on the 3rd weekend of August in Dithmarschen
Tellingstedt is a municipality in the Dithmarschen district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, located in the wide Dithmarschen marshland between Heide and Albersdorf. The Tellingstedter Volksfest is held annually on the 3rd weekend of August and is considered one of the social highlights in the Tellingstedt calendar — a true village tradition with a clear program structure.
The "Bunter Nachmittag" (Colourful Afternoon) begins at 2:00 PM — organised by the Tellingstedt Social Association — with a grand raffle, coffee and cake, and initial community activities. The evening is the classic start with a party night and DJ.
The highlight: Traditional parade starting at 1:00 PM through the village, featuring clubs, floats, music bands, and the Tellingstedt village community. Afterwards, honours will be presented on the sports field, followed by a concert. In the evening, a party night in the market hall.
Morning: Rooster crowing contest with the pedigree poultry breeders' association starting at 9:30 AM — a discipline that has become rare in Northern Germany and is lovingly maintained in Tellingstedt. Afterwards, traditional suckling pig feast, children's disco, king's shooting by the shooting clubs, morning service, and closing party.
The market hall at Mühlenberg is the meeting point for coffee and cake during the folk festival. The Tellingstedt Farmers' Wives bake homemade cakes all weekend — a Stapelhol and Dithmarschen tradition that connects the folk festival with everyday village life.
The Tellingstedter Volksfest is not just an amusement fair — it is a community festival with ritualised programme items. The parade, rooster crowing, suckling pig, king's shooting — these are rites that have been repeated for generations. Guests of honour and clubs from the entire Dithmarschen region are invited. Anyone who wants to experience Northern Germany in its most original form will find much more here than just carousels and bratwurst.
From August 21 to 23, 2026, Tellingstedt will once again transform into the folk festival capital of Dithmarschen. The venue is the Tellingstedt market hall at Mühlenberg 36 and the adjacent sports field. The dates are listed in the official event calendar of the municipality (tellingstedt.de/termine) and on the Dithmarschen tourism website.
The 2026 programme follows the proven three-day structure that Tellingstedt has maintained for generations: kick-off on Friday, parade and concert on Saturday, and a traditional Sunday with rooster crowing and king's shooting. The exact programme times and bands will be announced by the organising associations before the event.
