Highlight of the 19th Nacht der Vulkane: two-day festival of lights with simulated volcanic eruption from Olbrück Castle
The Laacher See volcanic region is one of Germany's most geologically fascinating areas. Around 13,000 years ago, a volcano erupted here, creating a crater that is now home to Lake Laach. The entire region between Mendig, Maria Laach, Plaidt, Burgbrohl, and Kruft bears the traces of this volcanic history – visible in basalt rock, tuff caves, and an unusual landscape. The annual "Nacht der Vulkane" (Night of the Volcanoes) is the festival week of this region, and its undisputed highlight is the Lichterfest (Festival of Lights) at Hain near Olbrück Castle.
Olbrück Castle is a medieval hilltop castle perched picturesquely on a phonolite rock above the Brohltal valley. The castle has a history spanning over a thousand years and is one of the most impressive castles in the Eifel. For the Festival of Lights, its location is used to literally set the scene for the region: When a simulated volcanic eruption erupts from the castle at 11 PM on Saturday evening – a pyrotechnic spectacle with light effects, smoke, and fireworks – the volcanic history of the region becomes tangibly present for a moment before the eyes of thousands of spectators.
The festival begins on Saturday at 2 PM. A colorful market spreads out on the Hain and in the castle's surroundings: stilt walkers, magicians, acrobats, and walking acts create a funfair atmosphere. Stalls offer regional specialties, cold and hot drinks, sweets, and snacks. Families will find play areas and activities for children. The RPR1 stage is the musical center: the cover band "Schall & Rauch" plays popular hits and keeps the mood lively into the evening.
As dusk falls, the grounds transform into a world of lights. Fairy lights, illuminated paths, lit trees, and the castle bathed in warm light create a fairytale atmosphere. The suspense builds towards the big moment at 11 PM. When the "volcanic eruption" begins, it is a pyrotechnic production that impresses even visitors who have seen many fireworks shows – the combination of the castle backdrop, the region, and the story makes the event unique.
On Sunday, the festival continues in a more relaxed manner: catering, a small stage program, family activities, and the opportunity to explore Olbrück Castle and the surrounding hiking trails in peace. The climb to the castle is worthwhile for the panoramic view over the Brohltal valley, the Eifel, and as far as the Middle Rhine.
The Lichterfest is part of the main program of the 2026 Nacht der Vulkane (July 17th to 26th, 2026) and the highlight of a festival week encompassing Mendig, Plaidt, Burgbrohl, Maria Laach, and Kruft. Those arriving from the Middle Rhine, Koblenz, Bonn, or Cologne will experience one of Germany's most extraordinary regional productions.
The 2026 edition marks the 19th iteration of the Nacht der Vulkane and thus also a particularly festive staging of the Lichterfest at Olbrück Castle. The organizers from the Laacher See volcanic region association are organizing the two-day spectacle with RPR1 as the media partner. A detailed program update with all acts and show times will be published by the organizer in early summer 2026. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
