Traditional Kirchweih in the former monastery town of Heilsbronn — Procession, beer tapping, funfair, and Sunday shopping around the Minster
Heilsbronn is a town in the Ansbach district in the Bavarian administrative region of Middle Franconia, located between Ansbach and Nuremberg on the railway line. It is primarily known for the Heilsbronn Minster, the monastery church of the former Cistercian Abbey of Heilsbronn and the burial place of the Burgraves of Nuremberg and Hohenzollern Margraves. The Kirchweih is the town's largest social event and takes place annually in October.
The festive opening is traditionally marked by the Kirchweih procession, which kicks off the weekend. With the beer tapping, the Kirchweih is officially opened. Afterwards, the town center transforms into a festival ground with rides, shooting galleries, stalls, and gastronomic offerings.
The festively decorated town center around the Minster offers a varied program for all ages: musical entertainment, stalls, crafts, and a funfair. The highlight is the Sunday shopping event, when shops open in the afternoon (usually 1:00 PM–6:00 PM) and the whole town is bustling.
The Heilsbronn Minster is not only an architectural landmark but also a concert venue: as part of the Kirchweih and the town's cultural activities, sacred concerts are held in the Minster. Special exhibitions — such as the recent one on the burial place of an Elector Princess — uniquely combine folk festival and high culture.
Heilsbronn is located in the Rangau, the hilly landscape between Ansbach and Nuremberg. The Kirchweih is an expression of the vibrant club and civic culture and a tourist attraction for the entire region — a folk festival with a monastic heritage as its backdrop.
The Heilsbronn Kirchweih 2026 is scheduled for October 8 to 12, 2026. For five festival days, the festively decorated town center around the Minster transforms into a festival ground: the traditional Kirchweih procession marks the start, followed by the beer tapping. The funfair with rides, stalls, catering, musical entertainment, and a Sunday shopping event shape the program for all ages.
