Largest outdoor sports event in the Bavarian Forest — Mountain run, Race Night, MTB, Children's race at Dreisessel
Neureichenau is located in the southeastern Bavarian Forest, in the district of Freyung-Grafenau, directly on the border triangle of Germany–Austria–Czech Republic. Above the village towers the Dreisessel (1,333 m), one of the most famous granite rocks in the Bavarian Forest, with a mountain hut, hiking trails, and a magnificent panorama stretching to the Alps. The region is considered one of the most beautiful mid-mountain sports areas in Germany.
The Tag des Sports is the annual major event of the Dreisessel community Neureichenau and the surrounding clubs. Under the tongue-in-cheek motto 'Quälspass am Dreisessel' (roughly translated as 'Painful Fun at Dreisessel'), the event combines several competition formats on the route from the village up to the Dreisesselhaus and back. The focus is on the mountain run, supplemented by mountain bike tours, Nordic walking, a children's obstacle course between Dreisesselhaus and Hochstein, and the spectacular Race Night in the village late in the afternoon.
At the village square, the longest beer bar in Bavaria (as self-proclaimed by the organizers) provides refreshments. Live bands play before and after the Race Night, and an after-race party keeps the mood going late into the evening. Dishes from Bavarian Forest inn cuisine, Bavarian Forest beer, and Tyrolean specialties are offered.
Several euros from each entry fee go to the Friends of Schutzhaus Dreisessel Association, which supports the renovation of the historic mountain hut on the summit. An additional euro is contributed by the Neureichenau Business Association.
The organizers (Dreisessel community Neureichenau, in cooperation with RSC Tittling, Friends of Schutzhaus Dreisessel, etc.) have published the date and main program on tag-des-sports.eu. Registrations are handled via the platform spoferan.com.
Over 1,000 athletes are expected from the southeastern Bavarian region, the Mühlviertel (Upper Austria), and southern Bohemia (Czech Republic). The event is open to all age groups and skill levels.
Entry fees vary per discipline — for the Race Night, last year's price was €11 (with €2 donated to the Friends of Schutzhaus Dreisessel Association). Current prices and registration via spoferan.com (link on tag-des-sports.eu).
By car: A3 exit Pocking-Bad Füssing, then B388/B12 towards Freyung and continue via Waldkirchen to Neureichenau. By train: via Passau, then Waldbahn towards Freyung and bus to Neureichenau.
Registration for all competitions via spoferan.com. Entry fees in previous editions started from €10–€11 per discipline (Race Night). Current prices and registration via tag-des-sports.eu.
Race office in Neureichenau Town Hall. Bib pickup for Race Night: 4:30 PM at the Town Hall. Award ceremonies at Neureichenau village square.
Those not participating in a race can experience the day as spectators at the village square or at the Dreisesselhaus — a hike up to the summit, including the mountain hut with local delicacies, is a great day trip for families.
