Trail running and music festival in the Bavarian Forest at the border triangle
The 3Kings3Hills Trail & Music Festival is the most important trail running event in the southern Bavarian Forest. The small border community of Haidmühle — right at the border triangle of Bavaria, Czech Republic, and Austria — is the event and start/finish location. The three namesake Kings or Hills are the distinctive elevations Almberg (1,139 m), Haidel (1,165 m), and Dreisessel (1,332 m) — three mountains in the low mountain range region between the Bavarian Forest and Šumava (Bohemian Forest).
The festival offers an exceptionally wide range of distances, covering everything from beginners to ultra pros:
All distances from Marathon upwards are ITRA-recognized (International Trail Running Association) and award index points, which are crucial for qualifying for top competitions like the UTMB Mont-Blanc in Chamonix. This makes 3Kings3Hills an internationally mandatory event for the German and Austrian trail scene, attracting athletes from all over Europe.
What makes the 3Kings3Hills special is its direct connection to a Music Festival at the finish line. Entry to the evening's open-air concert is included with the race registration. Several bands from the regional and national indie, folk, and rock scene will perform on the main stage in Haidmühle, complemented by DJs and acoustic sets. The combination of top athletic performance and communal celebration makes the festival unique.
A hallmark is the partnership with the pizza oven manufacturer Gozney: every finisher receives a fresh slice of pizza straight from the oven at the finish line — the Trail and Pizza concept. In addition, there are free showers, finisher medals, a tracking app (mandatory from Shorty), drop bags for ultra distances, and aid stations along the routes.
The fifth edition will take place on Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25, 2026. The majority of the races will start over the weekend in Haidmühle, with routes leading over the three local mountains of the Bavarian Forest and detours into Bohemian and Austrian territory.
The 100 Miles Ultra typically starts early on Friday morning, taking the top athletes through both nights. The shorter distances are spread throughout the weekend — Marathon and Ultra on Saturday morning, Base and Shorty on Saturday afternoon. The Music Festival runs on Saturday evening.
Entry fees are tiered: Shorty €49, Base €99, Marathon €109, Ultra €119, Ultra Trail XL €199, 100 Miles Ultra €259. Companion tickets for the Music Festival can be booked separately.
By car via the A3 (exit Passau), then via the B388 to Haidmühle. By train to Passau and connecting bus or car. From the Czech Republic via Volary, from Austria via Aigen-Schlägl.
Online registration closes 24 hours before the event. On-site registration is possible, but at higher rates.
Participants must carry their own water bottle (at least 1 liter) — there are no cups at the aid stations. Mandatory equipment from Marathon distance: emergency blanket, whistle, mobile phone.
Included in the race entry fee. Companion tickets are also available (sold separately).
