Medieval festival at Falkenstein Castle in the Upper Palatinate Forest
The Medieval Days at Falkenstein Castle are among the most beautiful medieval markets in Eastern Bavaria. They take place at Falkenstein Castle – a high medieval complex above the market town of Falkenstein in the Cham district, in the heart of the Upper Palatinate Forest (Bavaria). The castle, located between Regensburg and the Czech border, provides a perfect backdrop for medieval activities with its fortifications and keep.
A medieval camp life emerges on the festival grounds: actors in historical costumes live, cook, and work as they would have in the 12th to 15th centuries. Craftsmen demonstrate old techniques (blacksmithing, felting, leatherwork, spinning, bow making). Combat demonstrations by fighting groups and evening fire shows attract a diverse audience of families, medieval enthusiasts, and day-trippers. For children, there is archery, hands-on activities, and child-friendly program items.
Falkenstein is a picturesque market town in the southern Cham district, nestled in the hilly landscape of the Upper Palatinate Forest. The castle and town form a historically grown ensemble that attracts numerous guests from Bavaria, the Upper Palatinate, and the Czech Republic every year. The Medieval Days are a fixed part of the cultural calendar and one of the highlights of the region's spring program.
The 2026 edition of the Medieval Days at Falkenstein Castle takes place from Friday, May 29th, to Sunday, May 31st. The castle grounds become the setting for a three-day medieval experience with historical camp life, market stalls, craft demonstrations, combat demonstrations, and evening fire shows.
For children, there is a dedicated archery activity. The historic castle tavern is open on Saturday and Sunday, allowing visitors to explore the interior of the castle as well. Admission to the festival grounds remains free, as in previous years.
Free admission. Food and drinks available for purchase at the historical market stalls on-site. Sources: oberpfalz.de, hey.bayern.
