About Brennberg Castle Theatre 2026
Brennberg Castle Theatre 2026 — edition 2026
The 2026 season of the Brennberg Castle Theatre is dedicated to William Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. For three weekends in July, Brennberg Castle in the district of Regensburg will be transformed into the enchanted Athenian forest of the Renaissance poet.
Munich director Georg Blüml stages the play with energy and sensuality – four lovers, three fairy spirits, a wedding, and the famously comical troupe of craftsmen around Zettel/Bottom with their 'Pyramus and Thisbe' play-within-a-play. The production is supported by the Kulturfonds Bayern.

Tips
Bring warm clothing for the open-air performance – even in July, it can get cool in the Bavarian Forest after sunset. A blanket or cushion for the bench is recommended. In case of rain, check the weather policy on the municipal website or okticket beforehand. Plan your journey in good time, as the castle ensemble has a limited capacity.
Summer Theatre at the Castle
As the summer evenings grow long and the light over the Bavarian Forest turns golden, the gate to one of Eastern Bavaria's most beautiful open-air theatre stages opens at Brennberg Castle. The castle walls, the old courtyards, and the surrounding forests form the natural backdrop for the Brennberg Castle Theatre – a volunteer-run, artistically ambitious summer project of the municipality of Brennberg in the district of Regensburg.
Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' 2026
For the 2026 season, the Castle Theatre has chosen a classic of world literature: William Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. Four lovers, a magical forest, elves and fairies, plus a troupe of amateur actors rehearsing a play for a wedding – this poetically comical game of love, enchantment, and self-discovery has been one of the world's most popular comedies for over 400 years. The story fits perfectly with a warm summer night at a castle.
Direction: Georg Blüml
The production is helmed by Munich director Georg Blüml, known for his energetic and sensual approach to classic works. His productions combine respectful engagement with the source material with a modern visual language – which is the appeal of the Brennberg Castle Theatre.
Three Weekends of Open-Air Theatre
The play will be performed over three weekends in July 2026 – Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM, Sundays at 7 PM. In good weather, the ensemble performs in the castle's inner courtyard; in case of rain, performances will move to a sheltered area or be postponed. The atmosphere of a summer night at an East Bavarian castle, with the sound of theatrical language, the crackle of lighting, and the gentle Bavarian Forest wind in the trees – it's unbeatable.
Kulturfonds Bayern and Volunteer Support
The Brennberg Castle Theatre is supported by the Kulturfonds Bayern (Bavarian Culture Fund) of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and Art – an acknowledgment of the artistic quality of this rural open-air stage. The project is sustained by volunteer citizens of the municipality of Brennberg, who prepare the grounds, sew costumes, and build the lighting and stage year after year.
Brennberg in the Bavarian Forest
Brennberg is a small municipality in the district of Regensburg, located on the western edge of the Bavarian Forest. The castle on a hill above the village gives the place its distinctive profile and is now a cultural centre – the Castle Theatre extends the historical significance of the site into the present. Visitors can combine a theatre evening here with a hike through the Bavarian Forest, a visit to the Walhalla, or a trip to nearby Regensburg.
