Icy island ritual on the second Christmas Day – 40th anniversary edition in Westerland
The Sylt Christmas Swim turns forty in 2026 – making it one of the established winter rituals of the North Frisian island. It originated in 1986 as a challenge among a group of islanders in a Sylt bar: Who can manage to jump into the icy North Sea on the second Christmas Day? This spontaneous test of courage grew year by year into a ritual that is now internationally renowned.
December 26th has been firmly reserved ever since. While families in Germany are eating leftovers from their Christmas roast, several hundred brave swimmers in Sylt make their way to Brandenburger Strand, many in costumes: Santas, superheroes, Vikings, or classically in swim trunks with a Santa hat. Regularly, there are over 100 participants, and in peak years, over 300.
The event begins with registration at 1:00 PM in the Galerie am Meer on the promenade. Places are limited (max. 150 participants for insurance reasons) and are allocated within minutes – those who want to swim should queue well before 1 PM. The actual swim takes place at 2:30 PM on the beach section near Hotel Miramar. Participants receive a certificate, a mulled wine voucher, and a small surprise. Water temperature is typically 6-8 degrees Celsius.
Those who know Sylt only as a summer bathing and celebrity island will discover a different side on December 26th: quiet beaches, crisp northern air, storms, and the Wadden Sea in their rawest form. Westerland, with its promenade and bathing facilities at Brandenburger Strand, serves as the venue, with Hotel Miramar (Sylt's oldest seaside hotel) as the backdrop. The event is also free for spectators – several thousand onlookers gather on the promenade every year.
In 2026, the Sylt Christmas Swim turns 40 – an occasion for a particularly festive atmosphere. The event follows the established schedule: Registration on December 26th, 2026, from 1:00 PM in the Galerie am Meer on the Westerland promenade, swim at 2:30 PM at Brandenburger Strand. Maximum 150 participants.
Based on experience, places are taken within 5-10 minutes after 1 PM. Those who want to swim should queue well before 1 PM at the Galerie am Meer. Spectators can watch the spectacle for free from the promenade. Mulled wine stands on the promenade, après-swim atmosphere at Hotel Miramar.
Free participation (max. 150 spots, on-site registration at 1 PM). Free to watch. Mulled wine and snacks at stands on the promenade.
By car: Via the Marschbahn (car train Niebüll–Westerland) or the A23/B5 to Niebüll, then take the Sylt Shuttle. By train: Direct DB Marschbahn from Hamburg to Westerland. Westerland train station is a 5-minute walk from Brandenburger Strand.
On-site on December 26th, 2026, from 1:00 PM in the Galerie am Meer on the Westerland promenade. Maximum 150 participants – places fill up within minutes. Registration is free.
The DLRG (German Life Saving Association) will be present with lifeguards. Put on warm clothing after the swim; there are mulled wine stands near the promenade. Those with medical risks (heart, circulation) should seek medical advice.
