Six-day annual festival of the Vogelgilde (bird guild) at the Landgasthof Harmonie
In the village of Barlt-Busenwurth, in the heart of Dithmarschen, the Vogelgilde has held sway for generations when the grand annual festival takes place in June. The Vogelschießen here is not a shooting club spectacle in the West German sense, but a club-like guild tradition of North German character — with its own flag, its own festival rules, and set rituals. The children's guild of Barlt-Busenwurth, which maintains its own festival with over 150 years of tradition in parallel, carries on the customs.
The Vogelschießen spans six consecutive days and follows a fixed dramaturgy: from the fir branch decoration as a symbolic opening, through gate shooting and wreath binding, to the tattoo ceremony and the festive parade with polonaise. The highlight is the citizens' shooting on the last day — an open competition in which every adult can participate. Whoever shoots the wooden bird from the pole at the end becomes the guild's Bird King or Queen.
The venue for all events is the Landgasthof Harmonie in Barlt-Busenwurth — a traditional Dithmarschen inn with a large festival hall and outdoor area. This is where people eat, dance, and shoot.
Barlt is a small municipality in the marsch (marshland) of Dithmarschen, nestled in the wide landscape of Schleswig-Holstein's west coast. The district of Busenwurth — a typical name for a settlement on a 'Wurt' (man-made mound) — belongs to it. The region has its own density of customs with numerous shooting, bird, and guild clubs, whose festivals structure the year.
The festival program of the Vogelschießen Barlt-Busenwurth 2026 follows the proven six-day dramaturgy. On Tuesday, June 16, the festival begins with the erection of fir branches. This is followed by gate shooting and wreath binding, the setup of the festival grounds, the children's festival day with the tattoo ceremony, on Saturday the grand parade with polonaise — and on Sunday, June 21, the public citizens' shooting, which determines the new Bird King and Queen for the season.
By car via the A23 (exit Heide), then the B431 towards Meldorf, and from there continue to Barlt. By train to Meldorf, then a short journey by bus or taxi.
The parade and the citizens' shooting are open to the public. Guild contributions or entrance fees may apply for events in the festival hall of the Landgasthof Harmonie.
The festival hall and the shooting range are both at the Landgasthof Harmonie. The festival tent offers traditional Dithmarschen cuisine and drinks. It is worth walking the entire route of the parade.
