One of the largest and oldest funfairs in the Osnabrück district with over 480 years of tradition
The Oeseder Großkirmes looks back on an exceptionally long history. The first documented evidence of an annual market in Kloster Oesede dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries. What began as a cattle and trade market developed over the centuries into today's large showman festival. The combination of historical depth and a modern showman landscape makes the Kirmes a Volksfest of special importance in the event calendar of the Osnabrück district.
With over 130 stall operators, the Oeseder Großkirmes is one of the largest Volksfeste in the region. The range extends from classic carousels and modern thrill rides, roller coasters, dodgem cars, and loop-the-loops to numerous food stalls, sweet shops, and game booths. Entrance gates feature lottery stalls, while inside the festival grounds, you'll find high-flyers, disco carousels, and ghost trains. The festival grounds extend over several streets and squares of the historic town center of Kloster Oesede.
Traditionally, the Kirmes is held at the end of September. The festival opens on Friday, Saturday and Sunday bring the largest crowds, and Monday concludes with a family day and a morning pint (Frühschoppen). The location at the transition from summer to autumn gives the Kirmes a special flair: the first cool evenings, illuminated carousels, and the scent of roasted almonds, Schmalzkuchen (traditional doughnuts), and bratwurst define the atmosphere.
Friday brings the festive opening and the first evening of the celebration. Saturday and Sunday are dedicated to the full festival operation with maximum attendance at carousels, food stalls, and game booths. Monday offers Family Day, discounted rates, and a relaxed conclusion to the festivities.
