About Oeseder Großkirmes

The Oeseder Großkirmes in the Kloster Oesede district of Georgsmarienhütte is one of the oldest and largest funfair events in the Osnabrück district. With a tradition of over 480 years, it is one of the most significant Volksfeste (traditional festivals) in Lower Saxony in terms of showman history. For four days, the historic town center transforms into a large festival grounds with more than 130 showman businesses – carousels, thrill rides, food stalls, game booths, and sweet shops. Families, young people, and seniors from Georgsmarienhütte, Osnabrück, and the entire southern district meet here in the last days of September for a convivial stroll, reunions, and to enjoy the autumnal Kirmes atmosphere.

Over 480 Years of Showman Tradition

The Oeseder Großkirmes looks back on an exceptionally long history. The first documented evidence of an annual market in Kloster Oesede dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries. What began as a cattle and trade market developed over the centuries into today's large showman festival. The combination of historical depth and a modern showman landscape makes the Kirmes a Volksfest of special importance in the event calendar of the Osnabrück district.

More than 130 Showman Businesses

With over 130 stall operators, the Oeseder Großkirmes is one of the largest Volksfeste in the region. The range extends from classic carousels and modern thrill rides, roller coasters, dodgem cars, and loop-the-loops to numerous food stalls, sweet shops, and game booths. Entrance gates feature lottery stalls, while inside the festival grounds, you'll find high-flyers, disco carousels, and ghost trains. The festival grounds extend over several streets and squares of the historic town center of Kloster Oesede.

Four Days of Festivities and Autumnal Flair

Traditionally, the Kirmes is held at the end of September. The festival opens on Friday, Saturday and Sunday bring the largest crowds, and Monday concludes with a family day and a morning pint (Frühschoppen). The location at the transition from summer to autumn gives the Kirmes a special flair: the first cool evenings, illuminated carousels, and the scent of roasted almonds, Schmalzkuchen (traditional doughnuts), and bratwurst define the atmosphere.
