About Carnival Parade Mutterstadt

The Mutterstadt Carnival Parade on Shrove Tuesday is one of the largest Fastnacht events in the Rhein-Pfalz district. The parade is organized by the Mutterstadt Carnival Club "Die Geeßtreiwer", a traditional carnival club whose name refers to a historical Mutterstadt specialty – the "Geeßtreiwer" were the goatherds who used to drive the animals to the Schiltigheim woods. The parade starts in the afternoon in Blockfeldstraße and winds through the Mutterstadt city center. Simultaneously, the grand street carnival with music, food stalls, and exuberant atmosphere takes place on Herrmann-Belzner-Platz in front of the Palatinum.

The Mutterstadt Carnival Parade is one of the most traditional and popular Palatinate carnival events in the Vorderpfalz region. On Shrove Tuesday, the last day of the festive season before Ash Wednesday, thousands of carnival-goers flock to Mutterstadt to experience the parade and then celebrate at the street carnival.

The Parade from 2:11 PM

The parade traditionally starts at 2:11 PM – the eleven, which symbolizes the "foolish number" in carnival symbolism, marks all important times of carnival. The assembly point is Blockfeldstraße, from where the procession moves through the Mutterstadt city center. Dozens of floats, walking groups, music bands, guards, and dance formations pass by, throwing sweets, flowers, and stickers ("Strüssjer" in Palatinate carnival dialect) to the spectators.

MCV "Die Geeßtreiwer"

The organizer is the Mutterstadt Carnival Club "Die Geeßtreiwer" 1879 e.V., one of the oldest carnival clubs in the Rhein-Pfalz district. The club's name is a reminder of the Mutterstadt goatherds ("Geeßtreiwer" = goat drivers), who shaped village life for generations as a local characteristic. Today, the MCV maintains the carnival tradition with gala sessions, children's sessions, guard and dance formations, and of course, the grand parade on Shrove Tuesday.

Street Carnival on Herrmann-Belzner-Platz

Parallel to the parade, the street carnival on Herrmann-Belzner-Platz takes place from 11 AM to 6 PM – the forecourt of the Palatinum, Mutterstadt's civic and cultural center. DJs and live music create an exuberant atmosphere, and food stalls offer sausages, fries, Berliner doughnuts, Palatinate wine, mulled wine, and beer. After the parade, the main crowd of carnival-goers moves to the Palatinum forecourt, where the party continues into the evening.

Palatinate Carnival Culture

Mutterstadt is located in the heart of the Palatinate carnival stronghold region. While Mainz and Düsseldorf are considered the strongholds of Rhenish carnival, the Palatinate has developed its own, slightly rougher and more convivial variant of Fastnacht. The Mutterstadt parade is part of this tradition and represents an exuberant, intergenerational family festival in one of the largest communities in the Rhein-Pfalz district.
