About Kult(ur)Woche

The Kult(ur)Woche Barlt is entering its second edition in 2026. From August 28 to September 6, 2026, the residents of the Barlt community (Dithmarschen district, Schleswig-Holstein) will make their village more colorful for several days — with concerts, performances, art events, and jointly composed songs. The central idea: residents are explicitly invited to contribute their own ideas and contributions to the program. The concept is low-threshold, participatory, and volunteer-driven — a model example of self-organized village culture in Northern Germany.

Barlt — a small Geest community with cultural aspirations

Barlt is a municipality in the Amt Mitteldithmarschen in the Dithmarschen district (Schleswig-Holstein), with around 1,200 inhabitants. Like many smaller Dithmarschen communities, Barlt thrives on its club life and voluntary engagement. In 2025, residents launched the premiere of the Kult(ur)Woche — a self-organized cultural week intended to turn the village into a stage for several days.

Second Edition 2026 — Shaped by Success

After the premiere in 2025 — during which Uli von Welt and Dierk Büsch sang a specially composed Barlt anthem — the event is entering its second round in 2026. A multi-day program structure is planned between August 28 and September 6, 2026, with various locations in the village (village square, community hall, church, private courtyards) being used. Planning begins in March 2026, with an open meeting to gather ideas and coordinate contributions.

Concept: Participation Explicitly Encouraged

The hallmark of the Kult(ur)Woche is radical participation: unlike curated festivals, the program is not put together by an organizer but emerges from an open planning process. Residents, artists from the region, and guests are invited to contribute their own ideas — concerts, readings, performances, art exhibitions, workshops, song evenings, jointly composed songs. The spectrum ranges from high culture to folk festival (Volksfest), from professional to amateur art.

Model Project for Village Culture

The Kult(ur)Woche is a model project for self-organized village culture, which is gaining increasing importance in the rural areas of Northern Germany. In a region where traditional village festivals (Dorf Feste) and Schützenfeste are still strong, the Kult(ur)Woche opens up an additional space for contemporary and experimental art — not aiming to replace the established festival culture, but as a complementary format. Boyens Medien, the local newspaper of Dithmarschen, provides editorial coverage for the event.

Kult(ur)Woche — edition 2026

The 2nd Kult(ur)Woche Barlt takes place from August 28 to September 6, 2026. Residents, artists from the region, and guests will create a multi-day program of concerts, performances, art events, and jointly composed songs. Participation is explicitly encouraged.

The second edition of the Kult(ur)Woche builds directly on the successful premiere in 2025. The program is developed through an open planning process — ideas are gathered and contributions coordinated at a public preparatory meeting in March 2026. The ten-day festival phase begins at the end of August.

Venues are spread throughout the village — community hall, church, village square, private courtyards, and outdoor areas. The program content remains deliberately open: concerts, readings, performances, joint song evenings, and art events alternate. The exact program will be published a few weeks before the festival begins on barlt-events.de.
