Three chamber concerts in the most important brick cathedral on the west coast
Meldorf is a town with around 7,000 inhabitants in the Dithmarschen district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, located about 80 kilometers northwest of Hamburg. Until the 14th century, Meldorf was the main town of the Dithmarschen peasant republic and is still characterised today by its medieval town layout, the Dithmarscher Landesmuseum, and above all, the mighty brick cathedral.
Meldorf Cathedral (formally St. Johannis Church) is the most important church on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein. The brick building from the 13th century combines Romanesque and early Gothic elements and is one of the largest hall churches in Northern Germany. With its powerful acoustics and historical substance, the cathedral has been a recurring venue for the SHMF for years — the combination of space and sound is almost unbeatable for chamber concerts and sacred music.
The Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, founded in 1986 by Leonard Bernstein and Justus Frantz, is Northern Germany's largest classical music festival. Over eight weeks — in 2026 from July 4th to August 30th — 150 to 200 concerts will take place at venues in Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Denmark, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Meldorf Cathedral is one of the permanent venues on the west coast, alongside Husum, Tönning, Friedrichstadt, and Brunsbüttel.
Meldorf Cathedral is located in the centre of Meldorf; the concert audience comes from the entire Dithmarschen district and the west coast — from Heide and Brunsbüttel to Friedrichstadt and Husum. In midsummer, attending a concert is a typical element of a cultural holiday on the west coast.
As part of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival 2026 (July 4th to August 30th), a trilogy of three concerts will take place in Meldorf Cathedral. The most important brick building on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein offers three summer evenings with chamber music and song — three programmes with different focuses.
