Schleswig-Holstein's largest free world music festival on the West Coast
The West Coast of Schleswig-Holstein is not the first place you would expect to find an international world music festival. That's exactly what makes the Frequenzen-Festival in Meldorf so special. Bands from Latin America, Africa, Europe, and Asia meet on the Rathausplatz in the shadow of the late Gothic St. Johannis Cathedral — along with a Dithmarschen audience that is otherwise more likely to be found in the marsh meadows than at concerts. The festival is Schleswig-Holstein's largest free world music festival, held every two years on the second Saturday in August (even-numbered years).
The 2026 edition brings together two spectacular acts. Chanson Trottoir from France offers French chanson with a café atmosphere and accordion romance. Doctor Krápula from Colombia brings ska-punk with a political message to the stage — the band has cult status in Latin America and has been touring festivals worldwide for two decades. More acts will be announced before the date. The patron for 2026 is District Administrator Thorben Schütt, who supports the festival as a cultural flagship of the Dithmarschen district.
Meldorf's Rathausplatz is one of the most beautiful open-air stages in Northern Germany. Framed by the town hall, the Dithmarscher Landesmuseum, and the Meldorf Cathedral — one of the largest church buildings in Schleswig-Holstein — a soundscape is created that sets historical architecture and world music in an unusual dialogue. The festival opens at 6 p.m., and admission is free.
Meldorf, with just under 8,000 inhabitants, is one of the oldest towns on the West Coast. It was once the main town of the Dithmarschen Peasant Republic (1227–1559) and is now characterized by its cathedral, the State Museum, and its vibrant cultural life. The state of Schleswig-Holstein and the district of Dithmarschen support the Frequenzen-Festival as an important sign of cultural openness in a region otherwise associated with crab boats and mudflat hikes.
On August 8, 2026, the Frequenzen-Festival will transform Meldorf's Rathausplatz into a world music stage. Starting at 6 p.m., the confirmed acts will perform against the historic backdrop of the Dithmarschen Cathedral. The event is considered Schleswig-Holstein's largest free world music festival and brings international music to the heart of the West Coast.
