Archery contest in the morning, festival ball in the evening — village tradition in Dithmarschen
Nordermeldorf is part of the municipality of Meldorf in the Mitteldithmarschen office, Dithmarschen district, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The marksmen's guild is one of the village's traditional associations and usually hosts the annual Schützenfest in May.
The format is classic North German: In the morning, the members of the marksmen's guild gather at the Dorfplatz Barsfleth for the Vogelschießen (archery contest) — the traditional competition for the royal title. An air rifle is used to shoot at a wooden bird; the one with the most hits on the small royal rings is crowned Schützenkönig (marksman king) or Schützenkönigin (marksman queen). In the evening, the group moves to the Zur Nordsee inn, where the actual Festball (festival ball) with live music, the proclamation of the king, and a communal meal takes place.
In the Dithmarschen district, a region characterized by marshland and the Wadden Sea on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein, many villages maintain similar marksmen's festival formats. The morning shooting and the evening ball create a festive day that is central to the community: Generations come together here, the king's chain is passed on from year to year, and neighborly relations are strengthened.
The Schützenfest Nordermeldorf is listed in the official event calendar of the Mitteldithmarschen office and is one of the office's classic spring dates. Before the actual event, the setup on the Dorfplatz Barsfleth traditionally takes place — an evening for the association, where all participants lend a hand.
As every year, the festive day begins with the assembly of the marksmen's guild on Dorfplatz Barsfleth. This is followed by the Vogelschießen — the core event of the day — and the crowning of the king. In the evening, the guild gathers at the Zur Nordsee inn, where the new Schützenkönig or Schützenkönigin is crowned and the festival ball with a live band and communal dinner takes place.
The exact schedule and the order of the shooting competitions will be published by the marksmen's guild shortly before the event.
Setup and preparations take place in the days leading up to the festival on the village square.
By car via the A23 (Meldorf exit), then take the L139 to Nordermeldorf. Train to Meldorf, then taxi or bus.
The morning Vogelschießen is usually open to the public; the evening Festball requires a ticket (available from the marksmen's guild, with possible evening box office sales).
Refreshments are available at the village square in the morning, and at the Zur Nordsee inn in the evening.
