About Family Days & Karl May Idar-Oberstein

Family Days meets Karl-May-Messe is an unusual combined fair at Messe Idar-Oberstein: It connects the classic family fair format with bouncy castles, activity stations, and children's entertainment with a thematic Karl May World – Native Americans, cowboys, leather crafting, Western shows, and horse action. The result is a weekend for families with children of all ages, who can try out experience stations in the large exhibition halls while immersing themselves in a childlike Karl May romance. An unconventional mix with flair that has established itself as a surprising crowd-puller in past editions.

Two Formats, One Fair

Family Days meets Karl-May-Messe is Messe Idar-Oberstein's answer to two parallel trends: on the one hand, the demand for large indoor family events that work regardless of the weather, and on the other hand, the unbroken popularity of the Karl May World – Winnetou, Old Shatterhand, Native Americans, and cowboys – which has shaped several generations in Germany and maintains its own festivals in Bad Segeberg and at Kalkberg.

ETB Family Days

The Family Days section offers a concentrated indoor children's program on the exhibition halls' floor space: bouncy castles of various sizes, movement courses, skill stations, face painting, craft activities with natural materials, and hands-on workshops for different age groups. Animators will accompany the stations.

Karl May World

In parallel, the Karl May World opens its doors: Native American camps with tipis, leather crafting, and feather headdress making; cowboy stations with lasso throwing and horseshoe tossing; Western shows with actors in Western costumes; horse demonstrations (depending on the edition); Karl May readings for children; trapper cooking with a campfire look. The combination of both worlds is unique for families and makes the weekend a special outdoor-indoor experience in spring.
