CSD in the Ruhr Area — Political and Festive

Christopher Street Day Bochum is one of North Rhine-Westphalia’s largest Pride events — alongside Cologne (Germany’s largest Pride event), Düsseldorf, and Dortmund. With several thousand participants annually, the CSD sends a clear political message for the rights of queer people, against discrimination, and for the visibility of queer lifestyles in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The organizer is the volunteer CSD-Orga-Team Bochum, supported by the local queer community and documented on the platform bo-alternativ.de.

Motto 2026: Feuer und Flamme

The motto „Feuer und Flamme“ (Fire and Flame) for the 2026 edition is programmatic: It refers to the passion with which queer people demand their rights, to the heat of public debates about gender, trans rights, and family models, and to the industrial heritage of the Ruhr area, where the phrase has a different, fiery history. The motto is simultaneously self-affirmation and an appeal — Bochum is determined not to relent, especially at a time when queer achievements are under pressure across Europe.

Dramaturgy of the Day

The CSD Bochum follows a well-established three-part structure: Demonstration in the afternoon, Festival in the late afternoon and evening, Party at night. The demonstration starts at 2:00 PM at Schauspielhausplatz, proceeds through Bochum’s city center (Massenbergstraße, Husemannplatz, Bongardstraße), and ends at the Mining Museum. Political speeches accompany the parade — topics for 2026 include the legal status of trans* people, the self-determination law, anti-queer violence, and the protection of queer refugees.

Festival at the Mining Museum

From 4:00 PM, the Festival at the Mining Museum begins — against the iconic backdrop of the headframe of the German Mining Museum. Several stages will feature live acts, drag shows, spoken-word performances, and political statements. Around the stages, there will be stands from regional queer initiatives, counseling centers, political groups, and associations. The festival has free admission and welcomes all generations — from queer youth experiencing their first CSD to the older generation remembering the beginnings of the Bochum movement.

Official CSD Party in the Rotunde

The finale, starting at 9:30 PM, is the official CSD Party in the Rotunde — a former railway roundhouse, now one of Bochum’s most important venues. DJs, drag performances, and a dance floor that traditionally lasts until morning. The party requires a ticket, with the net proceeds funding the next CSD.

Bochum — A City with its Own Queer History

Bochum has its own distinct queer history within the Ruhr area: the Schauspielhaus with its progressive productions, the Ruhr University as a cultural center, the alternative scene around the Bermuda3eck. The CSD brings these different strands together on one summer day — transforming the city’s industrial heritage into a queer stage. Travel by S-Bahn from all over the Ruhr area makes the CSD a regional meeting point: the queer community flocks together from Dortmund, Essen, Wuppertal, Hagen, and Witten.
