Bochum as a Festival City
Bochum, with 360,000 inhabitants, the sixth-largest city in North Rhine-Westphalia, has reinvented itself as a festival city in recent years. In addition to the famous Bochum Total (large city center festival), the main venue for Ruhrtriennale, and the Klangvokal Festival Dortmund-Bochum, the city has set its own gastronomic accent with Bochum kulinarisch. The concept: not an established restaurant mile, but a temporary, curated collection of street food and gourmet stalls directly in the city center.
The Boulevard as a Stage
The venue is the Boulevard – the pedestrian zone between the Bermudadreieck (Bochum's gastronomy district) and Husemannplatz. Over a kilometer-long stretch is equipped each year with wooden stalls, standing tables, fairy lights, and small stages. Those walking through the city center at lunchtime can sample at several stalls, grab a Kölsch between the standing tables, and observe the city commuting between office and outdoor pool vacation mode.
Over 20 Stalls, International and Regional
The gastronomic profile is deliberately broad: international street food classics such as Thai Pad Thai, Vietnamese Banh Mi, Mexican Tacos, Turkish Pide, Italian Pasta. Alongside these are regional Rhineland classics like Reibekuchen (potato pancakes) with apple sauce, Currywurst, Frikadellen (meatballs), Bratwurst, and upscale concepts like BBQ brisket, burger manufactories, vegan specialties, and patisserie stalls. Drinks are also diverse: Kölsch, Pils, Bochum brewery beer, wine from the Lower Rhine, cocktails, non-alcoholic options.
Five Days of Festival Rhythm
Bochum kulinarisch runs for five days from Wednesday to Sunday. Opening hours start earlier depending on the day of the week: Wednesday 5:00 PM–12:00 AM as the opening evening, Thursday to Saturday 12:00 PM–12:00 AM full festival days with lunchtime crowds, after-work gatherings, and evening atmosphere, Sunday 12:00 PM–9:00 PM as a quieter family and Sunday outing day. This structure allows different audiences to choose their timing.
Stage Program and Atmosphere
In addition to the stalls, there is a stage program: local acoustic acts, jazz combos, cover bands, and DJ sets provide the gastronomic soundtrack. Standing tables and benches are distributed to make strolling easy – those with a second beer in hand can simply move to the next stall. In the background, the architecture of Bochum's city center: Town Hall, Stadthalle, Christuskirche, Bermudadreieck.
Bochum in High Summer
Those who come to Bochum for Bochum kulinarisch can extend their weekend: the famous Bermudadreieck with its around 60 pubs is right on the Boulevard, the German Mining Museum tells the history of the Ruhr area, the Zeiss Planetarium and the Schauspielhaus Bochum offer culture. Bochum's reputation is shaped by change – those who are here during the summer experience a good cross-section.
