Bochum — Cultural Capital in the Heart of the Ruhr Area

Bochum, a major city with around 365,000 inhabitants in the Ruhr area (Arnsberg administrative district), was once one of Germany's most important mining cities. Today, Bochum is a university city (Ruhr University, formerly the largest university in Germany) with a vibrant cultural and music scene. The city has a distinct concert and festival tradition — from the Schauspielhaus Bochum to the Bermuda3Eck and the Ruhrstadion (now Vonovia-Ruhrstadion).

Bochum Music Summer — A Signature Event

Over the years, the Bochum Music Summer has developed into one of the city's most important signature events. The format combines 3 days of city center programming across 7 stages, over 1,000 acts, an average visitor count of around 150,000, and a clear free-admission concept. The organizer is Bochum Marketing GmbH (BMG), the city's municipal tourism and marketing organization.

Seven Stages — From Bermuda3Eck to Boulevard

The seven stages are spread across Bochum's city center — from the Boulevard (Kortumstraße) via Husemannplatz to the famous Bermuda3Eck (the pub district in the south of the city center). Each stage has its own genre profile:

• Main Stage Boulevard — the biggest acts, cover bands, and mainstream bands
• Bermuda3Eck Stage — Indie, singer-songwriter, rock
• Husemannplatz — Pop, electro, dance
• Westring Stage — Hip-hop and rap
• Classical Stage (e.g., Konrad-Adenauer-Platz) — Classical, choirs, a cappella
• Jazz Spot — Jazz combos and big band performances
• Street Art Spot — Walk-acts, improvisation, performance

Over 1,000 Acts — From Classical to Hip-Hop

The program diversity is the strength of the Music Summer. Classical ensembles, pop cover bands, hip-hop crews, electro acts, jazz combos, choirs, street artists — over 1,000 performances over three days. This means: a new act starts somewhere in the city center every 5-15 minutes. Visitors can choose whether to intensely follow one genre or stroll between stages and experience the diversity.

Wine Festival and Handicraft Market

In addition to the music, there are two important program components:

• Wine Festival — selected wineries from Germany (Rhineland, Palatinate, Baden, Mosel) and Europe present their wines. Tasting 3-6 EUR per glass
• Handicraft Market — regional artists sell jewelry, ceramics, textiles, wood, and glass works

Sunday Shopping

On Sunday, September 13, 2026, Bochum's city center will have extended shopping hours — typically 1 PM to 6 PM. This connects the festival with retail and boosts Bochum's businesses. A clever symbiosis successfully practiced in many NRW city center festivals.

150,000 Visitors — Largest Free City Festival in the Ruhr Area

With around 150,000 visitors over the weekend, the Bochum Music Summer is one of the largest free city festivals in the Ruhr area. Comparable to the Dortmund Hansamarkt or the Cranger Kirmes in Herne — but with a much broader musical profile. Free admission makes the format accessible — families, students, seniors, and anyone looking for an uncomplicated festive day are welcome.
