Wandering Music Festival of Lüneburg District — 2026 focusing on Jazz and Swing, at six venues, free of charge
Musikuss sees itself as a wandering festival of Lüneburg District. Instead of concentrating programming in one central location, the format travels through the municipalities, making cultural offerings accessible even in places that do not have their own cultural institutions. Six concert evenings are spread over about a month between February and March — from university buildings and halls to school auditoriums and the Ritterakademie. Each concert is free. The organiser is the Cultural Department of Lüneburg District, which hosts the event together with local associations, schools, and event companies.
Each edition of Musikuss is dedicated to a musical theme. In 2026, it's Jazz and Swing — styles with a long tradition in Northern Germany, reinterpreted in recent years by a young generation of musicians. Six concerts form the framework of the programme: on February 8th, the opening concert in the central building of Leuphana University Lüneburg, on February 15th at ONE WORLD Reinstorf, on February 22nd at Saal am See Barum, on February 27th at Gymnasium Oedeme, on March 1st at the PKL grounds Lüneburg, and on March 8th, the closing gala in the historic Ritterakademie in Lüneburg.
All six concerts are free — a deliberate decision by the district, which views Musikuss as a cultural policy initiative. The aim is to bring music culture to all parts of the district with low barriers to entry and to reach new audiences. The selection of venues — from the university to club rooms and concert halls — reflects this breadth. The concerts are usually accompanied by a music educator or moderator, ensuring that even guests without prior knowledge of jazz or swing can find access.
The exact artistic lineup for 2026 will be published by the Cultural Department in the weeks before the festival begins. As expected, the programme will feature Northern German jazz ensembles, swing combos, and big bands, as well as international guests. Experience from previous years shows a mix of established artists and young combos, often with roots in Lüneburg or Hamburg.
The strength of Musikuss lies in the diversity of its venues. The Leuphana Central Building — an architecturally striking structure by Daniel Libeskind — offers an unusual acoustic backdrop. ONE WORLD in Reinstorf is an intercultural meeting point with a vibrant atmosphere. The Saal am See in Barum combines rural idyll with a good concert ambiance. The Gymnasium Oedeme opens its auditorium for an evening concert. The PKL grounds in Lüneburg is an industrial event location. The Ritterakademie, finally — a historic building in the heart of Lüneburg — provides the festive frame for the closing gala.
The exact artistic lineup for 2026 will be published by the Cultural Department at short notice. The structure follows the proven key points:
