"The Forest Stands in Bright Color" — Pentecost Music at the Medieval Hilltop Castle
Falkenstein Castle has perched atop a ridge above the Selke Valley in the Harz mountains for over 900 years. It is one of the best-preserved medieval hilltop castles in Saxony-Anhalt and part of the state's cultural foundation. Anyone who steps through its massive gates and walks across the courtyards understands why: the Middle Ages are not staged here, but preserved.
Over the Pentecost weekend 2026 (May 24th and 25th), the castle will become the stage for a special musical format: "In Lichter Farbe steht der Wald — Harfenzauber und Gesang zum Pfingstfest". The poetic title says it all: Pentecost music with harp and vocals in the historic rooms, complemented by readings from medieval and romantic literature. The acoustics of the vaulted castle rooms give the music a special sound — fragile, intimate, almost meditative.
The concert runs from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on both Pentecost days and is designed as a "concert parcours" — the music moves with the visitors through various rooms and courtyards of the castle. In between, you can explore the castle independently, visit exhibitions, or take a break in the castle courtyard. The combination of concert and experience makes the format particularly attractive for families and day-trippers from the greater Halle, Magdeburg, and Harz district areas.
Falkenstein Castle is located in the Pansfelde district of the town of Falkenstein/Harz in the Harz district. The Selke Valley, with its clear stream, steep slopes, and the Selketalbahn (one of Germany's most beautiful narrow-gauge railways), makes the journey an experience in itself. Those attending the concert should also plan a hike in the Selke Valley — the viewpoints around the castle are among the most beautiful in the low mountain range.
The Pentecost concert is spread across several rooms and courtyards of the castle on both days. Harp melodies and vocals are the focus, complemented by readings. The concert runs alternately with independent castle tours — admission and visiting times are flexible within opening hours.
A detailed program with times and rooms will be published by the Saxony-Anhalt Cultural Foundation shortly before Pentecost.
