Year-round cultural season by the Worpswede Museums for the 150th birthday of Paula Modersohn-Becker
Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876–1907) was one of the most important trailblazers of modern painting in Germany. Her work, created in just a few years of intensive effort between Worpswede and Paris, combined expressive use of color, monumental forms, and a deeply personal engagement with the depiction of people and the self. She died at just 31 years old, a few weeks after the birth of her daughter. Today, she is recognized worldwide as a forerunner of Expressionism—and Worpswede is the place where her work can be experienced with particular intensity.
The Worpswede Museums are distributing the season across four thematic focuses: Barkenhoff will showcase 'ich bin/du bist' (I am/you are). Große Kunstschau is dedicated to the theme 'Respekt!' (Respect!). Haus im Schluh presents its exhibition 'Angewandt. Frau + Design' (Applied. Woman + Design). Kunsthalle Worpswede features French artist Inès Longevial in dialogue with Paula Modersohn-Becker. Each of these exhibitions highlights a different aspect of Paula's work and personality.
The official opening on February 7, 2026, is accessible with free admission. Throughout the season, themed guided tours, lectures, art talks, and special events will complement the exhibition offerings. The Paula Year 2026 in Worpswede is a major cultural event of supra-regional significance.
From February to November, the program is spread across four venues. Each museum pursues its own thematic focus. The opening on February 7 marks the festive start of the season, and the closing on November 1 signifies the highlight of the anniversary year.
The exhibitions complement each other thematically. Visitors who attend all four venues will experience a comprehensive insight into the life, work, and significance of Paula Modersohn-Becker.
