The region's largest Volksfest and Schützenfest on the last full June weekend
The Volks- und Schützenfest Bortfeld is considered the largest Volksfest and Schützenfest in the region between Peine and Braunschweig. This position has developed over decades and is confirmed by the high number of visitors, the extensive program, and the size of the amusement park. Thousands of visitors from the Peine district, the city of Braunschweig, and the wider region use the last full June weekend for a visit to Bortfeld.
The Volksfestgemeinschaft Bortfeld e.V., as a registered association, is the organizer of the festival. With professional structures, its own website, and continuous planning, the community organizes an event that goes far beyond a classic village folk festival. Birgitta Kühn is the central contact person for organizational matters.
The festive opening is marked by the opening service on Friday evening at 7:00 PM in the St. Georg Church in Bortfeld. This combination of religious rite and secular folk festival is a typical characteristic of traditional Schützenfeste and provides a special framework for the festival weekend.
The grand parade on Saturday afternoon is one of the weekend's highlights. The Schützenverein, Junggesellschaft, friendly clubs, music groups, and floats march through Bortfeld, bringing the festival tradition to the streets. Houses and gardens are festively decorated, the population lines the route, and actively participates in the festival.
The Bortfeld sports field at Bortfelder Straße 12a transforms into a complete festival grounds for three days. The festival tent, amusement park with rides, shooting ranges, food stalls, and market booths offer a wide range of experiences. The festival tent is the social hub during all three days, with catering, live music, and dance events.
From Friday afternoon to Sunday night, the Volksfestgemeinschaft Bortfeld offers a packed program. The amusement park is open throughout the festival days, and the festival tent offers a continuous program of catering, music, and dancing.
With its size and extensive program, the festival attracts thousands of visitors from the Peine district, the city of Braunschweig, and the surrounding region. Those who missed the Whitsun weekend will find a suitable major festival here four weeks later.
The detailed program will be published by the Volksfestgemeinschaft Bortfeld in early summer 2026.
