Free open-air jazz festival in the Hamburg metropolitan area – since 1996
SummerJazz Pinneberg is one of the oldest continuously existing jazz festivals in Northern Germany. Since 1996, the association SummerJazz Pinneberg e.V. has been organizing this four-day major event. What began as a local initiative project has become a firmly established festival brand, attracting jazz fans from the entire greater Hamburg area, Schleswig-Holstein, and beyond.
Pinneberg is located immediately northwest of Hamburg and can be reached in 10-20 minutes from Hamburg-Altona or Hamburg Hauptbahnhof via the S-Bahn (lines S3) and regional trains (RB61/RB71). This location makes the festival an attractive destination for Hamburg concert-goers as well – a mini-journey on a metropolitan scale. The district town, with its approximately 44,000 inhabitants, is the urban center of the Pinneberg district.
The festival is spread across five stages in Pinneberg's town center – on squares, in courtyards, and in front of civic buildings. Each stage has its specialization: classic Modern Jazz, Blues and Boogie, Funk and Fusion, Vocal Jazz, Big Band, or Latin. Over 50 artists perform over the four festival days, from Thursday to Sunday. The program is curated by the festival team with a keen eye for quality and stylistic diversity.
As with a growing number of German city festivals, admission to SummerJazz is free. The festival is financed by sponsorships, the supporting association, and the sale of food and drinks on-site. The idea behind it: Jazz for everyone, not just for the initiated. The open festival structure invites strolling – from stage to stage, between concerts, with the opportunity for culinary breaks in Pinneberg's cafés and restaurants along the festival route.
An interesting accompanying event is the Big Band Workshop on June 29, 2026 – a preparatory workshop that prepares musicians interested in big bands for the festival performances.
In 2026, SummerJazz Pinneberg celebrates its 30th anniversary edition. As established since 1996, the festival takes place on the second weekend of August – from Thursday, August 6, to Sunday, August 9, 2026. The five stages will be spread across the town center – venues and the complete artist lineup will be published on summerjazz.de and via the stage overview page.
The festival is complemented by a Big Band Workshop on June 29, 2026 – a preparatory format for interested musicians, which sets the mood for the main festival's big band performances.
The complete program and stage assignments will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival on summerjazz.de.
Admission to all festival concerts is free. Food and drinks are available at stands as well as in the surrounding cafés and restaurants of Pinneberg's town center. Tickets for supplementary workshops (e.g., Big Band Workshop) are available via tickets.summerjazz.de.
By train (DB Nordbahn): RB 61 from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof or Hamburg Dammtor in 10-15 min., RB 71 from Hamburg Altona in 15-20 min. to Pinneberg. Pinneberg station is centrally located, a 5-minute walk to the first festival stages. By car: A23 (Hamburg-Heide), exit Pinneberg.
Admission to all stages is free. Food and drinks are available at stands as well as in the cafés and restaurants along the festival route.
Complete festival program and stage locations can be found at summerjazz.de and the ticketing page tickets.summerjazz.de (for supplementary workshops and individual special events).
