About Strünkeder Sommer
Strünkeder Sommer — edition 2026
The 2026 edition of Strünkeder Sommer is a jubilee edition — the Emschertal-Museum, located in the castle, celebrates its 100th anniversary. The programme is accordingly denser and designed with special focuses: kicking off on May 14 (Ascension Day) with the family festival of the shooting clubs, followed by International Museum Day on May 17 with free admission and special tours.
Throughout the summer, there will be concert series (Folk im Kaminzimmer, Salonorchester Cantabile, Electric Residence Techno, Cuban Night, Sounds Like Sugar Indie-Pop), theatre (Till Eulenspiegel), open-air cinema, a street food picnic, and the four-day medieval spectacle at the beginning of September. The closing act on September 13 is the museum festival "100 Years of Emschertal-Museum".

Strünkeder Sommer — Culture under Herne's Castle Trees
Looking for a cultural series in NRW that isn't overcrowded yet offers a packed programme of music, theatre, and family events? Then Strünkeder Sommer in Herne is your destination. For five months, from May to September, Strünkede Castle and its park become a complex of stages for a diverse programme — curated by Stadtmarketing Herne in collaboration with the Emschertal-Museum, which will also celebrate its centenary in 2026.
Schloss Strünkede as a Backdrop
Schloss Strünkede is a moated castle with roots in the 13th century, today one of the few surviving castle complexes in the Ruhr area. The Emschertal-Museum, which documents the history of the city of Herne and the Emschertal valley, is housed in the castle. The extensive castle park features a body of water, linden trees, and several stage locations — for concerts, the intimate Kaminzimmer (fireplace room) or the meadow (open air for up to 3,000 visitors).
The Programme
Strünkeder Sommer 2026 has a broad lineup: a family festival by the Herne shooting clubs (Schützenvereine) to kick things off on Ascension Day, International Museum Day with free museum admission, a street food picnic with DJs, several concert series (Folk im Kaminzimmer, Salonorchester Cantabile, Electric Residence Techno, Cuban Night, Sounds Like Sugar Indie-Pop), open-air cinema, a medieval spectacle with over 100 camps, and a concluding museum festival for the centenary.
Curation: Culture for All
Stadtmarketing Herne formulates the motto "Culture for All" — low prices, accessible entry, a programme that appeals equally to older and younger generations. Family programme on Ascension Day, senior-friendly salon orchestra concerts on Sunday afternoons, a young techno series on Saturday evenings — Strünkeder Sommer bridges the generational gap.
Medieval Spectacle and Open-Air Cinema
Annual highlights include the four-day medieval spectacle at the beginning of September with over 100 camps, jugglers, a jousting tournament, and a medieval market — one of the largest spectacles of its kind in the Ruhr area. And the open-air cinema in mid-August, showing current blockbusters and classics in the castle park for four evenings.
Herne and the Ruhr Area
Herne is an independent city in the northern Ruhr area, administrative district of Arnsberg, North Rhine-Westphalia — with around 156,000 inhabitants, it is one of the more densely populated cities in the region. Schloss Strünkede is located in the northern district of Baukau and is easily accessible by car, train, and bus. Strünkeder Sommer is one of Herne's most important cultural events and an attraction for the entire Ruhr area between Dortmund, Bochum, and Gelsenkirchen.
