Stiftsmarkt — Schildesche's Big Neighbourhood Festival
The Stiftsmarkt is the largest and most traditional festival in Bielefeld's Schildesche district. From September 25th to 27th, 2026, the neighbourhood community will come together for the 30th+ time — with a flea market, funfair rides, live music, and street food. The organiser is the Werbe- und Interessengemeinschaft InSchildesche e.V., which has been organising the festival since the 1990s.
Schildesche — Neighbourhood with a Collegiate Church
Schildesche is one of Bielefeld's districts and looks back on a long history. The Stift Schildesche — a collegiate church founded in the 10th century, whose building still shapes the town centre today — gives the festival its name. The district in the north of Bielefeld is now a vibrant neighbourhood with residential areas, small shops, and a close-knit community. The Stiftsmarkt weekend is the central date in the district's annual calendar.
Flea Market, Funfair, Stage, Street Food
The festival brings four elements together:
- Large Flea Market with private stalls along Schildesche's central streets
- Amusement Rides — bumper cars, Musical Express, children's carousels
- Stage Programme — live music, local bands, DJ sets
- Street Food — from bratwurst to international specialities
InSchildesche e.V. — The Neighbourhood Community
InSchildesche e.V. is the district's advertising and interest group — an association of local traders, clubs, and engaged citizens that has been strengthening Schildesche's business and cultural life since the 1990s. The Stiftsmarkt is their most important event in the annual programme; in spring and autumn, other activities such as open Sundays and Advent offers are added.
Bielefeld — City between Teutoburg Forest and Münsterland
With almost 330,000 inhabitants, Bielefeld (an independent city in North Rhine-Westphalia) is the central city of Ostwestfalen. The city at the foot of the Teutoburg Forest combines scientific infrastructure (Bielefeld University) with traditional textile, furniture, and food industries. Schildesche in the north is one of the districts that have retained their village character — and the Stiftsmarkt celebrates this neighbourhood identity annually.
