42nd edition of the traditional village square festival at Stebbach Fire Station — famous for extra-spicy Currywurst
The Dorfplatzfest of the Stebbach Volunteer Fire Brigade is one of the defining summer events in the small district of Stebbach, part of the Gemmingen municipality. First organized in 1984, the festival will celebrate its 42nd edition in 2026 — a remarkable consistency for a village-run club festival. The organizer is the Stebbach Volunteer Fire Brigade, whose members organize the entire festival themselves — from setup to catering to dismantling.
The festival runs for two days — Wednesday (Ascension Day/Father's Day) and Thursday — on the village square in front of the fire station. Catering is handled entirely by the firefighters: grilled specialties from the charcoal grill (steaks, sausages, pork neck steaks), fries, salads from the club's cellar, homemade cakes in the afternoon. The Stebbach Currywurst is known beyond the region — the spice mix has been kept secret for years, and the spicy version is legendary. First-timers are warned: don't try the milder version without having accustomed your mouth to the heat beforehand.
Gemmingen is a municipality with about 4,700 inhabitants in the northern Heilbronn district, on the edge of the Stromberg-Heuchelberg Nature Park. It comprises the three districts of Gemmingen (main town), Stebbach, and Mauer. Stebbach itself has just under 1,000 inhabitants — a classic Swabian village with half-timbered houses, a church, a school, and an active fire brigade. The Dorfplatzfest is the most important summer gathering for the people of Stebbach and the surrounding area — Eppingen, Schwaigern, Brackenheim, Knittlingen.
Expect an intimate atmosphere in a manageable space, long beer benches under umbrellas, catering by Stebbach locals in fire brigade uniforms or club shirts, live music (usually a big band, occasionally a DJ in the evening), a children's play area, and a raffle. The mood is convivial, intergenerational, and relaxed.
In 2026, the Fire Brigade is sticking to the proven two-day format with Ascension Day as the main attraction. The May Father's Day is traditionally a top date for rural village festivals in Southern Germany — men with handcarts, families on bike tours, club outings.
The musical program will be finalized shortly, as usual — a dance band on Wednesday evening, acoustic sounds on Thursday afternoon. Catering will be continuous, with the extra-spicy Currywurst remaining the highlight, which, according to Stebbach legend, paralyzes the mouth for ten minutes.
Free admission. Currywurst portion approx. €4–5, grilled steak €6–8, snack plate €7–9, drinks at standard club prices.
By car via the L 1110 from Eppingen or the L 1101 from Schwaigern. Difficult by train — the nearest station is Schwaigern, from there a 15-minute taxi/bus ride. Parking available on the outskirts of the village.
Wednesday, May 13th, 2026, and Thursday, May 14th, 2026 — over Ascension Day/Father's Day.
Free admission. Catering by the Stebbach Fire Brigade at usual club festival prices. Currywurst with a heat scale — caution with the spicy version.
