Wiesbaden's fairytale Christmas market with golden lilies and 130 stalls
The Sternschnuppenmarkt is considered one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Hesse. Its unmistakable trademark is the golden lilies from Wiesbaden's city coat of arms – three stylized blossoms that have symbolized the state capital's connection to its Nassau tradition for centuries. Around 20 large illuminated lilies float above the Schlossplatz and along Wilhelmstraße, complemented by four lily gates at the market entrances and 51 small lily lights in the pedestrian zone. The three lily mascots accompany families through the market.
The market extends across four interconnected squares in the historic city center: The Schlossplatz in front of the City Palace and the area in front of the neo-Gothic Marktkirche form the core with over 130 stalls offering arts and crafts, mulled wine, and specialties. At Luisenplatz, right next door, is the Kindersternschnuppenmarkt with a stage, carousel, the Sternschnuppen-Express, and the Wichtelwald (Gnome Forest). At Mauritiusplatz, the 45m high Ferris wheel stands with the WinterStubb offering Hessian specialties. In the Kurhaus foyer, an extraordinary Christmas tree made of over 2,000 red poinsettias awaits.
Directly in front of the large Christmas tree stands the Stadtkrippe (City Nativity Scene), a walk-through nativity scene depicting the stable in Bethlehem. A changing program runs daily on the market stage: choir performances, children's choirs, an Advent calendar at the town hall, festive services in the Marktkirche, nativity plays, and live music. Tower brass music is regularly played from the Marktkirche tower.
The entire festive lighting – lilies, gates, stars, and snowflakes – runs on LED technology. This makes the Sternschnuppenmarkt one of the most energy-efficient Christmas markets in Germany, while still maintaining its characteristic fairytale atmosphere.
The market was created in 2003 as a deliberate redesign of the state capital's classic Christmas market – with the lilies as its recognizable identity. Today, it is a firm fixture in Wiesbaden's tourism calendar, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors from the Rhine-Main region and beyond every year.
The 2026 edition again spans four squares in the historic city center. The main market with over 130 stalls, the stage program at the Marktkirche, the children's market at Luisenplatz, and the Ferris wheel at Mauritiusplatz remain the core concept. The LED lilies and stars will be switched on for the opening on November 24.
