Kirchweih in the Upper Palatinate Lake District
The Steinberger Kirwa is the traditional Kirchweih of the village Steinberg am See in the Schwandorf district of Upper Palatinate. Organized by the Burschenverein Tannengrün Steinberg e. V., the festival at the Steinberg am See festival grounds is one of the fixed traditional events in the Upper Palatinate Lake District and is supported by the entire village community.
Kirwabaum and Kirwapaare
As is customary for an Upper Palatinate Kirwa, the setting up of the decorated Kirwabaum and the Austanzen der Kirwapaare (dancing of the Kirwa couples) in traditional costume shape the festival's events. The youth club and the Kirwamadln (Kirwa maidens) form the heart of the festival, which is celebrated over several days with brass band music, marquee operations, and dancing.
Living Customs
In Catholic-influenced Eastern Bavaria, the Kirwa is a central village festival: it combines religious tradition with exuberant conviviality. The Tannengrün youth club preserves this custom in Steinberg am See and ensures that the Kirwa attracts locals and guests year after year.
Steinberg am See
Steinberg am See is located in the Schwandorf district in the Upper Palatinate Lake District in Bavaria, in close proximity to the Steinberger See (Steinberg Lake). The festival grounds in the village form the backdrop for the Kirwa.
