Königsee — Small town in the Thuringian Slate Mountains

Königsee is a small town in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district in the state of Thuringia, located at the transition from the Schwarzatal valley to the Thuringian Slate Mountains. The town, with around 5,000 inhabitants, has been known for porcelain and glass production since the 19th century. The central market square with the town hall and town church forms the social heart of the city — and the venue for the annual Stadtfest in September.

Karnevalverein Unweiser Rat — Club history back to 1391

The Königsee Stadtfest has an unusual special feature: it is traditionally co-organized by the Karnevalverein Unweiser Rat Königsee. The club traces its history back to 1391 — one of the oldest documented club traditions in Thuringia. During the Stadtfest, the carnival members present themselves to guests in full traditional costume, deliver satirical speeches (Büttenreden), and create a lively atmosphere with their humor.

Program and Atmosphere

From Friday evening to Sunday evening, the market square is filled with a stage and festival stalls. Live bands from Thuringia play pop, rock, and Schlager music; the program is complemented by performances from the Karnevalverein, a parade through the town on Saturday, a traditional morning pint (Frühschoppen) on Sunday, and a children's program with a carousel and bouncy castle. Culinary highlights include Thuringian Bratwurst, dumplings (Klöße), cakes, and beer from local breweries.
