Three days of family festival on the stadium grounds — Stadtfest Geithain from June 19th to 21st, 2026
With around 6,500 inhabitants, Geithain is one of the smallest district towns in Saxony and is located in the Leipzig district, southeast of the trade fair city — in the coal region between Leipzig, Chemnitz, and Altenburg. Despite its size, Geithain has a rich history: first mentioned in 1186, with a medieval city wall with two preserved towers (Pulverturm and Wallgrabenturm), a late Gothic St. Mary's Church, and a Baroque town hall. The Stadtfest on the third weekend in June is the town's most important festival weekend — from June 19th to 21st, 2026, residents and guests from the surrounding area will gather on the grounds of the „Henning Frenzel“ stadium (named after GDR national player Henning Frenzel, born in Geithain in 1942).
Unlike many Stadtfeste in Saxony that concentrate on a market square or a city center area, Geithain's Stadtfest takes place on the festival grounds at the stadium — an open grassy area with enough space for a festival tent, stage, amusement rides, sports demonstrations, and a family area. The stadium itself (named after Henning Frenzel) serves as a backdrop and offers grandstand seating for the stage program. This choice of location reflects Geithain's identity as a city of sports and clubs: the local football club and numerous other clubs significantly shape the festival program.
The Stadtfest runs from Friday 5 PM to Sunday 10 PM — almost 53 hours of festival operation. Friday evening is typically the opening day with the first live music and an official welcome by the mayor. Saturday is the main festival day with stage program, sports demonstrations, family area, and the longest festival hours. Sunday offers a Frühschoppen (morning pint) and a family afternoon program. The exact program will be published in spring 2026 by the cultural department of the City of Geithain — inquiries via [email protected] or www.geithain.de.
Its location between Leipzig, Chemnitz, and Altenburg makes Geithain a natural meeting point for the southern Saxon region. Geithain can be reached in 50 minutes from Leipzig Hbf via the RB 110. Those who stay an extra day can visit the medieval city wall, the Geithain Local History Museum, or take a walk to the nearby Frohburg Castle. The Stadtfest offers an opportunity to get to know the small district town with its active civil society — the density of clubs is particularly remarkable: ASV Geithain, several shooting clubs, carnival clubs, local heritage clubs. State: Saxony, District: Leipzig.
The 2026 edition of the Geithain Stadtfest opens on Friday, June 19th at 5 PM and runs until Sunday, June 21st at 10 PM. The festival grounds at the „Henning Frenzel“ stadium offer space for a festival tent, stage, amusement rides, and family area. The cultural department of the City of Geithain organizes the weekend in collaboration with local sports and heritage clubs.
Classic elements include live music, sports demonstrations, children's program, and gastronomy — the exact program will be announced in spring 2026 at www.geithain.de and via the cultural department ([email protected]).
Free admission (as is customary for Saxon Stadtfeste). Food and drinks at usual festival prices: Bratwurst €4, Tarte flambée €8, Draft beer €4, Mulled wine €4. Amusement rides €3–€5 per ride.
