Wine in the Castle Courtyard
The wine festival at Rochlitz Castle is one of the younger, but already established wine festivals in Mittelsachsen. It uses an extraordinary setting: the castle courtyard of the high medieval Rochlitz Castle, which towers high above the Mulde valley. The organizer is the Schlösserland Sachsen administration of Rochlitz Castle, which has integrated the festival into the event calendar for several years.
Saxon Vintners and Saale-Unstrut Region
The vintners' selection is high-quality and regional: wineries from the Saxon Elbe region (Radebeul, Meißen, Diesbar-Seußlitz) present their white, red, and sparkling wines. In addition, there are producers from the neighboring Saale-Unstrut region — Germany's northernmost classic wine-growing area, also with a long tradition. Visitors can taste and buy directly from the vintners, from dry Müller-Thurgau and Bacchus to mineralic Weißburgunder and robust red wines.
Live Music, Magician, and Family Program
A varied accompanying program gives the wine festival its character: live bands and DJ sets shape the soundtrack of the day, magician Paul Buk regularly entertained visitors in past editions, and a balloon artist cheers up the children. Regional specialties and small snacks complement the wine tasting.
Medieval Castle as a Venue
Rochlitz Castle is one of the most impressive high medieval castles in Saxony. The complex dates back to the 10th century and was a residence and administrative seat for centuries. The castle courtyard, where the wine festival takes place, is surrounded by massive walls and towers — an atmosphere that clearly distinguishes the wine festival from a classic marketplace wine festival. The castle museum with the exhibition 'Fett, Einäugig, Revolutionär' and the historic castle kitchen can be visited — on the wine festival day with reduced opening hours until approx. 6 p.m.
Rochlitz, Mittelsachsen, and the Mulde Land
Rochlitz is located in the Mittelsachsen district, on the banks of the Zwickauer Mulde, between Chemnitz and Leipzig. The Rochlitzer Berg, which gives the famous Rochlitz porphyry tuff its name, dominates the landscape. Those who visit the wine festival can combine their stay with a hike on the Rochlitzer Berg or an excursion to Wechselburg.
