Hiking with various route lengths around Unkel
The Unkeler Dreisprung's name reflects the concept of three routes. Hikers can choose from several route lengths depending on their fitness, time budget, and interests. This variety makes the format inclusive: families with children will find their tour just as much as ambitious high-performance hikers who want to be out and about all day in the hills around Unkel.
Unkel is located at the transition between the Siebengebirge in the north and the Middle Rhine Valley in the south, on the right bank of the Rhine opposite Remagen. The hiking opportunities range from the towpath along the Rhine and through the vineyards to the wooded slopes of the Westerwald. The Rheinsteig and Westerwaldsteig trails are present here. The Unkeler Dreisprung utilizes this scenic diversity and leads through various terrain types.
Hiking has always been a communal experience, and the Dreisprung enhances this character through the joint event. Meeting points, refreshment stops along the route, and a communal closing celebration after the tours bring participants into contact. Local clubs are typically involved in the organization and catering.
Unkel boasts a rich event culture — with its cultural label 'Kulturstadt', the summer concerts 'Unkel Live', and other formats throughout the year. The Dreisprung is part of this series and represents the nature-oriented side of the city on the Rhine.
The 2026 edition continues the proven format with three route options of varying difficulty. The hiking event utilizes the excellent network of trails around Unkel and incorporates classic routes on the right Middle Rhine.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in late summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: meeting point in the morning, start of the individual routes, refreshment stops along the way, and arrival at the finish in Unkel with a communal closing celebration.
Exact route details, lengths, and meeting points will be communicated via the City of Unkel.
