Four-day folk festival in southern Oberhausen with barrel tapping and ecumenical service
When the May warmth reaches the Ruhr area, the Oberhausen district of Styrum kicks off the folk festival season. The Styrum Volksfest takes place from May 7 to 10, 2026 at Martin-Heix-Platz on Josefstraße and around St. Josef Church — four days of funfair with a family flair in southern Oberhausen.
Around 23 showmen's businesses and stalls line up on the manageable festival grounds:
Its compactness is its strength: The Styrum Volksfest is a classic neighborhood folk festival that brings generations together.
The opening is traditionally marked by the barrel tapping on Thursday, May 7, 2026, around 5 PM at the festival tent. Local politicians, club officials, and the mayor or district administrator of Oberhausen jointly tap the first barrel — the official starting signal for the folk festival. Beer at special prices marks the festival's opening.
A special feature of the Styrum Volksfest is the ecumenical service on the bumper cars on Mother's Day Sunday, May 10, 2026. Catholic and Protestant pastors conduct the liturgy amidst the showmen's attractions — an unusual, heartfelt tradition that makes the relationship between the folk festival, the parish, and the neighborhood visible. Afterwards, the rides operate as usual; many families spend Mother's Day at the funfair.
The district of Styrum is located in the south of the independent city of Oberhausen (North Rhine-Westphalia). Unlike the north, which is dominated by the Centro, the south, including Styrum, Lirich, and Borbeck, has a more middle-class residential character. St. Josef Church is the prominent building that anchors district festivals and folk festivals. The event is organized by the KG Styrumer Löwen, a carnival society with ties to the district.
The independent city of Oberhausen, with around 211,000 inhabitants, is located on the western edge of the Ruhr area and belongs to the Lower Rhine region. Famous for the Centro, Germany's largest shopping mall, the Gasometer as an industrial monument, and the LVR Industrial Museum Zollverein Coal Mine, the city has a diverse cultural profile. District festivals like the Styrum Volksfest are the honest counterweight to the big-event structures.
The Styrum Volksfest starts on Thursday, May 7, around 5 PM with the barrel tapping at the festival tent. On Martin-Heix-Platz and around St. Josef Church, about 23 showmen's businesses and stalls line up. On Mother's Day Sunday, May 10, the special highlight occurs: an ecumenical service amidst the bumper cars. Afterwards, the rides operate as usual.
Free admission. Rides at showmen's prices.

Thursday evening for the opening with barrel tapping is atmospheric. Sunday morning for the ecumenical service on the bumper cars — one of Germany's most unusual folk festival traditions. Mother's Day afternoon with families.
