A Parish Festival in Bottrop-Eigen
When benches are set up, stalls are erected, and fairy lights are strung around the Liebfrauenkirche on the first weekend of September, it's community festival time in Bottrop-Eigen. The festival belongs to the Liebfrauen community, a sub-community of the City Parish of St. Cyriakus Bottrop, newly structured since 2024. For two days — Saturday and Sunday — the area around the church transforms into an open meeting zone where community members, neighbors, friendly parishes, and all Bottrop residents are welcome.
Day 1 and Day 2 — Program Structure
The community festival typically runs over two days:
- Saturday, September 5th, 2026 — Day 1: Festival opening in the late afternoon, barbecue, drinks, live music or performances by community choirs and bands, relaxed evening conclusion.
- Sunday, September 6th, 2026 — Day 2: Festive parish service in the Liebfrauenkirche, followed by a morning pint (Frühschoppen) with musical accompaniment, lunch, coffee and cake in the afternoon, children's program, and festival conclusion.
Liebfrauenkirche Bottrop-Eigen
The Liebfrauenkirche in Bottrop-Eigen (a district in southern Bottrop) has been the spiritual center of an active community for decades. The address An Liebfrauen 8 marks an urban ensemble of church, rectory, parish hall, and parish garden — typical for Catholic community centers in the Ruhr area. Throughout the year, it hosts services, sacraments, first communion and confirmation preparation, senior afternoons, and children's and youth groups. The community festival makes this otherwise inwardly focused activity visible for a weekend.
City Parish of St. Cyriakus
Since January 1st, 2024, all Catholic communities in Bottrop have been united as the City Parish of St. Cyriakus. The Liebfrauen community continues to exist as a sub-community, with its own local parish council committee, its own services, and its own festivals. The community festival signals: Despite the structural reform, the local community lives on. It is a festival of identity — the Liebfrauen community shows that it remains visible as an independent daughter within the larger parish family.
Who Attends the Community Festival?
The parish festival appeals to three target groups:
- Active Community Members, for whom the festival is the highlight of the community year — many help with setup, sales, and in the kitchen.
- Loosely Connected Individuals — people who only attend church occasionally but see the festival as an annual opportunity for connection.
- Neighbors and Bottrop Residents who have no religious affiliation but visit the festival as good neighbors, have a coffee, buy cake, and let their children play.
Bottrop-Eigen — The District
Bottrop-Eigen is a traditional district in the south of the city with established structures, its own shooting club (Schützenverein), its own Catholic community, and close cohesion. The Liebfrauen community festival is one of the district's identity festivals — an important date in the social calendar alongside the Schützenfest BSV Bottrop-Eigen and the Vattertach Kirchhellen-Bottrop.
