The Sky Above Tempelhofer Feld

The STADT UND LAND Giant Kite Festival uses the unique backdrop of Tempelhofer Feld for a family festival that is hard to find anywhere else in Germany. The former airfield is now Berlin's largest open space at 300 hectares – and thus the perfect venue for kites, which, with their several dozen meters of wingspan, require an unusually large amount of space.

What to Expect

Throughout a long festival day (typically 11 am–8 pm), you can expect:

• Giant kites up to 50 meters long, piloted by international professional crews
• Stunt kite demonstrations by world and European champions
• Stage program with music and talks about the world of kites
• Kite workshop for children to build their own

Behind the festival is STADT UND LAND Wohnbauten-Gesellschaft mbH, one of Berlin's state-owned housing companies, focusing on the southern districts (Neukölln, Tempelhof-Schöneberg). Tempelhofer Feld and Berlin's Urban Identity

Tempelhofer Feld in the Tempelhof district (Tempelhof-Schöneberg borough) is the former airfield of Tempelhof Airport and has been publicly accessible since 2010. A citizens' initiative in 2014 secured its preservation as an open space, free from any development. Festivals like the Giant Kite Festival underscore the cultural significance of this place – as a playground, sports ground, and event space for all Berliners.
