About Giant Kite Festival

The STADT UND LAND Giant Kite Festival is Berlin's largest kite festival and has long been a must-attend event in the calendars of many Berlin families. Once a year, international kite pilots transform the sky above Tempelhofer Feld into a flying stage: giant kites up to 50 meters long, stunt kite demonstrations by world champions, plus a stage program with music, kite workshops, bouncy castles, face painting, and street food. The organizer is the state-owned housing company STADT UND LAND. Admission is free.

The Sky Above Tempelhofer Feld

The STADT UND LAND Giant Kite Festival uses the unique backdrop of Tempelhofer Feld for a family festival that is hard to find anywhere else in Germany. The former airfield is now Berlin's largest open space at 300 hectares – and thus the perfect venue for kites, which, with their several dozen meters of wingspan, require an unusually large amount of space.

What to Expect

Throughout a long festival day (typically 11 am–8 pm), you can expect:

  • Giant kites up to 50 meters long, piloted by international professional crews
  • Stunt kite demonstrations by world and European champions
  • Stage program with music and talks about the world of kites
  • Kite workshop for children to build their own
  • Bouncy castles, face painting, and family activities
  • Street food and drinks
  • Opportunity to bring and fly your own kites

Organizer: STADT UND LAND

Behind the festival is STADT UND LAND Wohnbauten-Gesellschaft mbH, one of Berlin's state-owned housing companies, focusing on the southern districts (Neukölln, Tempelhof-Schöneberg). The kite festival is a flagship event for the company and embodies the spirit of the Tempelhofer Feld tradition: a festival that is deliberately accessible and free of charge on the vast open space.

Tempelhofer Feld and Berlin's Urban Identity

Tempelhofer Feld in the Tempelhof district (Tempelhof-Schöneberg borough) is the former airfield of Tempelhof Airport and has been publicly accessible since 2010. A citizens' initiative in 2014 secured its preservation as an open space, free from any development. Festivals like the Giant Kite Festival underscore the cultural significance of this place – as a playground, sports ground, and event space for all Berliners.

Giant Kite Festival — edition 2026

On Saturday, September 12, 2026, the STADT UND LAND housing company invites you to the 13th edition of its Giant Kite Festival on Tempelhofer Feld. From 11 am to 8 pm, giant kites up to 50 meters long and stunt kite demonstrations by world and European champions will fill the sky above the former airfield. The stage will feature a program with music and talks, plus workshops for building kites, bouncy castles, face painting, and street food. Admission is free.

13th Edition on Tempelhofer Feld

The 13th edition of the STADT UND LAND Giant Kite Festival will take place on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 11 am to 8 pm on Tempelhofer Feld. The date falls in early Berlin late summer, a time traditionally with good wind and weather conditions.

What's Planned

As usual, the focus will be on the international giant kites, which can be up to 50 meters long and require several people to control. The program will be complemented by stunt kite performances by world and European champions, a stage program with live music and talks about kite flying, a kite workshop for children, bouncy castles, face painting, and street food stalls.
